I was just at jiffy lube as i was out of town so didnt have a choice,   they seem a ripoff $50-60 for oil change and they try selling you stuff that you don't need.

I've used them for the last 4 years, and I especially liked the fact that they're open 24 hrs. But I've grown tired of them and their shtick by now, which is why I started this thread.

He worked on my car this Friday and I'm very happy with him. He seems honest and his fees are modest.

I called them, & the recording said that they are closed (24 hours)?? & what type of shtick are you referring to?

Anyone know of a mechanic that can pass me on inspection even though it wouldn't pass necessarily?

It's an old car, drives well but I don't want to put in money to fix up.

A good mechanic - His name is Sal. He used to be on McDonald between ave J and Bay Pkwy. He moved about a year ago and is now working in the Wheels to Lease garage. He takes any car, not just if it was leased by Wheels to Lease and knows what he is doing. He will work with you and accepts used car warranties. I have been using him for almost 10 years and dont remember having a single issue with him. He does not do body work though.

Aside from going for a second opinion, how do you know if your honest-sounding mechanic is really honest?

I guess you cant know for sure, but if every time you come in he finds some expensive problem, beware. (unless your car really is THAT bad)

If he has the opportunity to do things but tells you that you don't need it or it's not worth it for you he's probably honest.

I'm looking for a recommendation for an auto shop in Brooklyn that does NYS inspections that won't fail my car ;). My power steering isn't really working and the repair is too expensive ($700, $250 for new pump + $450 for new rack and pinion). It's an older car and I'm not looking to invest that money right now. Just need a mechanic that won't give me any issues or try to offer his services. Thanks

Was driving last night and went over someone's muffler which fell off someone's car and after that heard rattling under my car! Must have damaged something! So I went this morning to a mechanic and after having put it on the lift twice and as well took it for a test drive to see what's causing a rattling like noise, sounds like a piece of metal shaking! Or bumping under the car but they could not figure it out! They tried shaking every part underneath and could not figure it out! Anyone one with similar experience or have knowledge what it could be?   .

Anybody knows why a cars electronic information display thing by all the gauges would start fading in the corners and becoming more dim in general? I have a feeling it has to do with extreme temperatures either very hot or cold weather that makes it fade. Because usually in the mornings it looks regular then as the day goes on it starts fading (in the summer, winter's I don't remember what happened).

It's not a LCD screen it's more like a dot by dot type of screen like an alarm clock ( I'll try to post a picture soon)

First thing I would tell you to do is check the fuses inside the car make sure they're all working.

Will check.
Backlight?
I don't think so but possibly. I think each dot is it's own light. Like the screens on a Sansa clip MP3 player.

Look like this

Top one was during the day and it's bright and clear. Bottom was taken at night and even then it looks dim and fuzzy. In real life the corners barely looks like the backlight on.

it's a backlight. The connection is either loose or one of the bulbs are out.
