Clearly sourced as an ancient Minhag. The holy Apter Rav calls it מנהג ישראל תורה and bothers to give a few reasons for it. We don't need a better source than this.

for many of us, the holy Apter R' is enough of a source.

He wasn't called the ohev yisroel for nothing.
But he's not a source, he's defending a minhag. There's a big difference there.

Ok most of us considering the Holy Apter rov the best source are sure that if this minhag would in reality stem from Easter he'd sense that b'Ruach kodshoi, especially when attributing holy reasons for it.

Baking shlissel challah was no easy task squeezing in on this Friday busy with packing the pesach away, otherwise just buying ready challah would be much easier.

This is the way my m.i.l. does it. My mother did the key - and she has no minhagim (baalas teshuva), so she must have gotten it from one of her teachers.
