Value of AA vs LY for award tickets
« on: June 30, 2010, 07:31:48 AM »
Should I spend Matmid LY points or  AA miles for flying US- Israel?

Please discuss value of LY points vs AA miles for redeeming (LY ) tickets,  extra charges, etc.

El Al charges at least a few hundred dollars in fuel surcharges on award tickets that AA doesn't.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

Is it easier to get a seat with El Al?

ElAl does not release first class seats to partners, business I think is restricted as well.

With AA you can book on El Al or on any OneWorld carrier, so it will be easier with AA.

aussiebochur,
I have not tried AA/El Al for first, but it is available in business.

Does AA have access to all the economy award seats that ElAl release.

There will be seats in business but I think they're restricted, meaning there will be more business seats available when booking through ElAl then when booking through AA. Again, I'm not 100% sure.

That is incorrect. El Al does not restrict Business seats one bit. X Availability is the same for Matmid & AA

Ok, thanks for the correction.
Does it make sense that they only release 2 business  seats per flight?

Btw, I know I shouldn't have posted it since I wasn't sure but here is an example where it would be nice to be able modify the posts.

They usually can only see 2 seats on the Asia flights, but if you book them both and there are more seats available it will show up right away

The main problem with EL AL is that points expire in 2 years, and I had to let them expire in some cases.
I do not have that problem with AA ( I still have 90K miles moved from TWA in 1999...)

Wow, I didn't even realize that! If there really no way to renew them?

Quote from elal's website,
4.Question:How long do the points remain valid? Answer:Points accumulated in your account from EL AL flights remain valid for 3 years from the flight date. The same is true for Extra Points awarded for your tier status or as a flight incentive. Points earned from Matmid partner companies have unlimited validity. They do not expire.
