The airport is kind of far from city center. Probably 45 minutes each way. Train is probably the best as it will put you right in city center.

Not sure where exactly I want to go but just to get an example even though heard its not worth it to go there, the Anne Frank Museum is around a 30 hour by train....
30 minutes :) Have not been to Museums in Amsterdam. There are too many things to see and do, just find what interests you.

Taxi took 30-35 minutes, but I guess it all depends on traffic. Train sounds a good idea if it gets you to city center.

3 hours?
You mean 3 hours in the city proper?
Since getting back and forth will take time.
Yes you'll have 3 hours in the city.

How much was a taxi?

It's about 20 minutes or less on the train, from what I remember.

It says in the wiki that 8 hours is the minimum to stopover, however though if my stop is 7 hours does it makes sense to go into town and see stuff or is it a waste of time?

They changed the stop to 6:30 hours i assume its still doable, but is it worth thte shelep to go out for three hours?

I don't think there's anything "must see" in city center. Depends hoe much you care and hoe much time you actually would have once taxing etc is taken into account.

I figured worst case scenario if the stopover ends up being too short there is still the airport to checkout and I heard there a really cool plane watching area to see planes take off and land.

This info is incorrect. Airport is close to citiy center about 15m by train

So the consensus for the best option over shabbos seems to be the holiday inn express south.
Has anyone stayed in town at any of the hotels that are shabbos friendly?
W, waldorf, ic, andaz, hyatt Regency, Marriot?

I stayed at Regency during the week, andaz on shabbos.

The Andaz wasn't particularly good for shabbos but it is in the eruv and a short walk from Portuguese Shul and is pretty walkable to vondelpark and the rest of city center. We had engineering disable motion sensors in the room, and they provided us shabbos timers for the lamps. There's an exit via the stairs from the rooms without automatic doors, but the stairs are locked going up, so you'd need someone to walk up with you or take you in the elevator. There is a manual door near the restaurant into the hotel. There are also TVs showing about the art going 24/7 so it didn't necessarily provide the best environment. It had a club feeling about it.

The Regency seemed like it would have been easier for shabbos, but it's out of the eruv, and while it's a it closer to the Portuguese Shul, is further from much of city center and there not much around. We had a baby so eruv was needed. The staff at the Regency are amazing and it's pretty relaxed and no-frills but the hotel is new and clean.

Were you able to go down the staircase from your room without assistance?

Did you eat by chabad for shabbos or brought your own food?
I'm assuming the andaz is a  lot nicer?

Stayed at the DoubleTree over Shabbos. Assigned room was on the 4th floor, easy accessible staircase. Hotel only a short 10-15 minute walk from the Portuguese Shul and about 25 minute walk to Chabad.

It’s a short 3 minute walk from Centraal.

Brought food as we were there in the summer when early Shabbos was at 9pm, zman at 1030.

Stairs down were fine without assistance.

Andaz is more elaborate, the Regency is minimalist but was very comfortable.

Do you think it's worth going to the andaz over the Regency?

My wife would rather a nicer hotel that's why I'm asking

The Andaz was out there decoration wise and was overall a little roudier. It's no PH. I much preferred the quietier atmosphere at the Regency and the Regency club was a nice touch - they have free drinks at happy hour. I also found more fruit etc to eat at the Regency breakfast.

The biggest advantage of andaz is location. It's right on a canal and walking distance to most of the city center. Regency is much more on the edge of the center and is pretty much a 10 min metro ride everywhere (though being next to the metro comes in handy for getting to the kosher places as the metro is faster than the tram).

The reason I chose Regency for most of the trip was to save 10k Hyatt per night.

Hi I’m going to be in Amsterdam for a shabbos in Jan and was wondering wether it would be nicer to stay in The frum area or in the city and eat by chabad. Also if anyone has ever stayed at the marriot for shabbos is it shabbos friendly? Tia!
