I have a 3:30 stopover on Friday (5:50am-9:20am).

Do you think it's possible to see something? perhaps any kosher place? or an open shul?

Thanks.

Lucky for you, the airport is a 5-10 min drive from the city.

Can I get some thoughts?
I can either be in AMS for 2 full days or 1 day and a second where I'd have to leave around 4PM. In terms of things to do, can the general stuff be done in 1.5 days or do I really want the full 2 days?

Thanks! Anyone else's thoughts? (I plan to read through the thread later to see what to do in those 1-2 days, but just curious now in terms of booking travel arrangements.)

Just read through the thread. Seems like it can definitely be done in 1.5 days.

I'm from Amsterdam originally. If you tell me around what time of the day you will be there i can create a nice itinerary for you. there's a lot to do in and around amsterdam.

Hi,
We are having a 9 hour layover in Amsterdam and Im trying to plan the the day to accomplish the most. We should be arriving around 7:45 am. We would like to visit the Portugese Synagogue and see the flower market. We do not have to go see the Ann Frank Museum if there is no time. Any suggestions of how to plan our day, what to see first and any must see places?
Is Meyers still the best place to go for lunch?
Any help would be really appreciated.
Thanks

We went to the flower market and were not very impressed. Might have just been the time of year, though. Also went to the sandwich place, and that was good, though it was a bit more than I expected (though that may have been a function of the exchange rate)

If you like beer, try the Heineken Brewery. We did not go, because they wanted 16 euro per person and there are plenty of free ones in America.

Visit Portuguese synagogue.
Eat by Sal Meier restaurant.
Stroll around, see those boats (where people live on, have a postbox on shore, etc)

Where do I stroll around to see the houseboats? Would you know which tram to take? We will be at the flower market and Portuguese synagogue. is it nearby?

We arrived in Amsterdam where we had a 8 hour layover. As in most of Europe they only accept credit cards with the chip or Euro.
We bought a round trip train ticket which leaves on a speed train directly from the airport to the grand central station. From there we decided to walk instead of taking the trams since it was a nice weather and it is the best way to see the city. The streets and canals are beautiful and the architecture is very old and it is interesting just too look and walk around.
We walked to Dam Square where they have the castle and a Ferris Wheel and other rides. Then we went to look at the flower market which was very beautiful. This is about a half hour walk from the train station.
The Portuguese Synagogue is a 10 minute walk from the flower market and is a must see. They have a treasure chamber in the basement with old silver and Torah Scrolls that are hundreds of years old.
From there we took a tram to Sal Meijer to get some sandwiches. The Rhye train station is right there and we took a speed train directly to the airport. The way took about 15 minutes.

We didn't actually stay there when we went last summer but looked into it extensively and the reviews seemed pretty bad so we chose the (then) brand new Andaz Amsterdam using points and had an awesome time there-it is a really cool and funky hotel-really different (it was on sale on jetsetter a little while back-dont know if it still is). It was really centrally located as far as attractions is concerned and if I remember correctly it was only a few stops a way from one of the shuls by tram-it is a bit far from the kosher food though not too bad (most hotels are far from that area).

Pullitzer is down the block from Anne Frank. Great stay there.
Hotel is made up of 24 townhouses combined. Wavey hallways. No two rooms are the same. Very cool. Great staff.
Stayed summer 2012.
