Problem is I don't even know what price is considered good and what not.

Anyone have some pointers as far as what to look out for? Brand/features/price...

I'm willing to spend as long as it's worth it.

You find 3 burners enough?

And in general, what makes Weber the "best"? Longevity? Reliability? Or is it more the name...?

That. Speak to anyone that uses anything else, they need to buy a new one after 5-10 years.

You find 3 burners enough?
I have had BBQ's with 10 people and it was enough. If you went up to like 20-30, you'd probably need something bigger.

Sounds good then. Room for 10 is far more than enough for me.

Cooking/grilling area is one thing. # of burners and BTU's is another. The ratio is not particularly well aligned across different grills. Even if the cooking area is big enough to barbecue for 10, the # of burners and BTU's may make the grill underheated, or unevenly heated, etc. That's the kind of info you'll see in professional reviews.

If you're looking for an alternative to Weber, check out Onward Manufacturing. Their Broil-Mate brand can be found at Home Depot, and Broil King at Lowes for starters. They're consistently ranked right up there with Weber, and they're generally slightly cheaper (still close to Weber than Char-Broil and it's ilk though). I paid around than $450 (after tax and 10% off) for a Broil King Signet 20 from Lowes, plus around $50 for its cover on Amazon. I'm very happy with it so far, 18 months or so in.

It's $399 on Amazon. But too many bad reviews for my taste

Not to mention only 28 reviews vs. 800+. Even if all 28 were positive I'd be leaning more towards the Weber.

Same as Lowes, but you can't use a coupon on Amazon. I got the NG version, which is $50 extra.

Look at professional reviews, see what CR says about them for example. Also, I read through a handful of the 1, 2, and 3 star reviews, and right off the bat I can see most of them are moot if you're buying from a B&M retailer like Lowes.

Weber has its issues too. Besides, for the same price you'd only be able to get the smallest Weber Spirit, which is much smaller (too small to barbecue for 10 people).

ETA: To reinforce the point, see here. 4.7 average rating with 263 reviews at Lowes.

ETA2: Compare that to 4.8 with 250 reviews for the Weber Spirit E-210, which is the same price but only 2 burners (vs 3 on the BK) and 450 sq in cooking surface (vs 635 on the bk).

Interesting points. I'll research them all properly when I get home.

Also, if you do go with a Weber Spirit, check out Home Depot. They have special editions of some of them with the 'Gourmet BBQ System' for the same price as the normal models.

Apparently, when you turn on a propane grill, after you open the gas, you have to wait thirty seconds before you turn the knobs on the grill so the gas can pressurize in the hose. Otherwise your grill will never get hot
