I am having a problem with my computer's network adapter/internet connection. I deactivates on its own; usually after sleep or if I leave the computer idle too many times in one day. Many times this also happens when I turn it on for the day. Each time I want to connect to the internet I need to start the windows network troubleshooter which takes a few minutes but fixes things, usually. Is there anything wrong with the computer, with the adapter, or with me?

I have an HP envy dv6
TIA
All of the above  :P But seriously you can go to Device Manager (search in start menu). Expand the Network Adapters category. Right click on the problematic adapter, and click properties. Click on the power management tab on top, and post a screenshot of what you see. My suspicion is that the adapter is going into a low power mode and failing to "wake up" properly after.

Thanks I have the same issue and just put it into airplane mode for a few seconds and it fixes it, I was too lazy to look into it to try to find the cause but hopefully the problem is now solved

Remind me in a few days because it doesn't happen every day but it makes sense to be the cause

How would I know which of the adapters it is?

Under network adapters it should say something about wireless

More than one.
-Intel (R) Centorino (R) Wireless N2230
-Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller
-Remote NDIS based internet sharing device #3

Which one?

The "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" box is checked.
The "Allow this device to wake computer" box is unchecked.

Sorry was struggling with getting a screenshot. A shortcut that used to work (windows+shift+S) doesn't seem to work anymore.

Have both unchecked and click OK and you are done

Will do. Just wondering? What is it, and what am I essentially doing when unchecking?

As a side, what's the screenshot keyboard shortcut (win 8.1)?

you are not letting your wireless card sleep when your computer sleeps

Does that have anything to do with when I first turn on my computer too?

Exactly what it says. The computer will turn off the adaper when it's idle, when that box is checked. Screenshot with the Alt and prtscrn keys or snipping tool

Another question. Will that not cause my computer to get/stay hot even while asleep?

You shouldn't notice any difference its just the network card that will stay awake not the whole computer

can someone please help. My friend asked me to help him, he has a olympus recorder and he wants to transfer the files to his computer but all he sees on the computer is this file called wmpinfo.xml. None of the recordings show up on the computer even though they're still on the recorder itself. This is a new problem he has been able to do it in the past but recently something happened and he cant find his files. If anyone can please help. Thank you
