I tried the Finding the Windows Key Without Any Software (Advanced Users Only) method, takes 10 seconds.

Is there any reason to  save Window 10 product keys/anything before installing Windows 7 on top of it? (It's a brand new Win10 laptop)
Thanks!

No, your hardware is already registered with Microsoft, you will be able to install it at any time
I wonder what people who type "u" instead of "you" do with all their free time.

Nice!

I am going to transfer the windows 7 license from an old, dying laptop. What will happen to that laptop? Will it stop working? (do I need to copy off all files first?)

Thanks!

It will work fine, it works even without a key it's just annoying.

So at what point would you need a product key, you're hardware is always registered with Microsoft, no? #n00b

Windows 10 only would need a product key if fresh installing it on a computer which never had Windows 10.

Clarification regarding windows 10 activation:
Windows 10 has a new form of activation called "digital entitlement".  Basically, once you have a legally activated Windows 10 (either by upgrading free from 7/8.1, or pre-installed on pc), your computer is saved on microsoft activation servers as having "entitlement".  Therefore, if you were to clean install windows 10 any time afterwards, you won't need to put a product key, because microsoft knows you deserve to have windows activated.

What's Rufus?  Why just not copy it onto the usb?
you downloaded an ISO file. Rufus will make your USB bootable so you can install off of it.  http://rufus.akeo.ie/
If the machine you want to install windows on is functioning (and windows 8+), you can mount the ISO within windows, and install from windows. (or you can extract iso contents with 7zip and the like, and run from windows)

im very confused
you have a windows 7 machine. and you are trying to fresh install windows on that machine? best idea is to download the ISO, use rufus to put onto USB,  restart computer and boot from usb, and install (to do a clean install, during setup, choose custom (advanced) not upgrade, and delete partition(s)).

heres a guide - http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1649-clean-install-windows-7-a.html
