Got it. So if my computer has 2 (out of 4) empty slots, I'm better off putting in two 4gb sticks than one 8gb stick?

That's a shame, because if I put one 8gb stick it's easier to add another later.
In regular use you probably won't notice any difference. I would do 1 8gb stick

First, you install windows 7 and activate it. Now, Windows 7 or newer gets a free upgrade to Windows 10. After you do that, your computer will be registered (not sure if that's the right term) with Windows 10, so you can do a clean install of 10 from a DVD or USB, and you won't need to activate it again.

Yes it will be registered with Microsoft as licensed for Windows 10
I had windows 7 which was activated, I upgraded to Windows 10 and it says;
Activation failed because this device doesn't have a valid digital entitlement or product key. Error code: 0x803F7001

Anyone?

Go to Start menu > search for device manager > under "network adapters", what's listed as the wifi or wireless adapter?
Intel (R) dual band wireless-AC 3160

How did you upgrade?  Are you sure Windows 7 was activated?  Has the Windows 10 connected to the internet?

locked out of windows 10 new computer. password is incorrect, "you are offline. please sign on with the last password used on this device."

Tried so far - changing password on microsoft site then using a wire directly to hookup to the internet, shows connected, but still get above message.

tried booting while pressing shift to get to troubleshooting screens, safe mode, but once you are there still asks for password to do anything.

any ideas?

No need to do that, just go to advanced options in windows update and select "notify to schedule restart".

I can't argue with that, but it works for both me and DW.
