You are right that most of the times it is one of the two mentioned, though I've seen a lot of networks that have that changed to different subnets.

No, a different thing.
Any way to get it from my computer? So I don't have to contact Verizon?

No, it's something that is in the modem.

No, it's something that is in the modem.
And I guess I can't get it from a modem that won't turn on, right?
I'm worried that Verizon won't want me to use this modem, and will try to sell me a new one.

IIRC they cannot force you what to use. Anyway you don't need to tell them that your old one broke, tell them that it was somehow reset... Just insist that they shall give you the PPPoE username and password.

Will do :) thanks! And where do I put that when I get it? Into the admin section of the router? (I think I need to factory reset it since it looks like the router's password was changed)

Okay I reset the router, and now this is what I get when I log in:

Do I want to "enable continuous retries"?

You can enable it but that's not what will make it work. Do you have your PPPoE credentials? Do you have the phone line (rj11) plugged into the modem?

After a 2nd look this device seems to be just a router and not a modem  :( :( :(

Which kind of cable (phone line or the thicker internet one) do you have coming from Verizon? And do you have another device from where that cable comes?

I did not get the PPPoE  yet.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who couldn't figure out what this is! I don't know what's thick and what's thin; it's a cable plugged into the WAN port of this device. The other end comes out of a tannish box attached to my wall, it's about the size of a light switch cover only thicker.

That wasn't very scientific, but hopefully helpful!

And obviously you don't know where that wall jack comes from.

Thick means thicker than your normal old school phone wire. You can also look at the connector when it's unplugged if it has four wires or 8.

Do you still have your old router (which you say is broken)? What model is that?

I don't have a house phone so it's hard to say. The connector looks like it has 2 wires inside - one red and one black.

Yes - the old router is ActionTek GT784WNV. It fell down rather forcefully and now won't turn on.

Now we're getting it!

Your old device is a modem and your new device is a router. Although many modems nowadays are also routers, a router can never replace a modem. Therefore you'd need to get a DSL modem first (it can be through Verizon or BYOD which is Verizon compatible.)

You can compare the WAN port (on your neighbors device) and the Phone port on your broken one, and you'll see that they are completely a different size, because your old one took a thin old telephone wire, while the router is meant to be after that device and takes in a thicker internet wire.

That explains it! It's funny because the phone wire from mine clicked into the router, but now that I examine it, the port does look wider.

If my friend used to have DSL, does that mean that there was a modem there too? I can try to get it.

Thanks for all your help!

If he uses DSL there's definitely a modem there too (though at times it's a box connected to the wall.) Just look after the cable to which this router was connected to.

And after you get a modem you'd need the PPPoE credentials which you'll enter in the modem settings.
