As it has not yet been mentioned:
Random (ie various) error messages and erratic behavior can also be a faulty drive or faulty RAM. The nuclear way to determine this is factory reset, but  Dell's recovery suite (if you can get it to boot) also has hardware tests.

Did you set the BIOS clock? Is your clock battery dying?
Seems only select laptops have that battery.
Opened this HP device just to see what you're talking about, but there doesn't seem to be any such battery.

Trying to update an old laptop with a dead battery (won't charge) to Windows 10. Update won't install until battery is at least 40%. I tried disabling battery in device manager, didn't help. Any way to get Windows 10 to install without replacing the battery?

If you remove the battery will the laptop work when plugged in?
Workflowy. You won't know what you're missing until you try it.

Do a clean install from a usb (back up your data first)

There is no way to "minimize the desktop to the taskbar" so it's probably something else. Is your issue that you see an empty desktop while you do have stuff on your desktop and can see it when going to the desktop via the folder?

Maybe you somehow added/opened another virtual desktop. Try opening the using the Windows Key + Tab shortcut and select the main desktop.

Right-click on desktop: Turn on "show desktop icons"

If that doesn't work:
A. Press winkey+A and see if you're in Tablet Mode. If you are, turn it off.
B. Open Task Manager, select Windows Explorer and restart it. (I don't know what Alt+Shift+F4
does other than making your desktop icons disappear, but it does do that.)

Can you take a screenshot so we can see what your screen looks like?

This doesn't affect how your desktop looks, just which programs are visible at once.
