Do they make adapters to connect a VGA monitor to a laptop that only has an HDMI port?
Thanks

Yes
Cool! Are there specs to look out for that would make a difference? Or are they all basically the same?

Trying to take HD from old PC (win 7) and use as-is in new PC (windows 8.1) tried and I am getting error messages (can barely read them as screen is not readable till windows loads for some reason). Something about signature?

As main hd or a second?  It will not work as the main hd without reinstalling.

Really? :( I really just need the better processor and more memory. Not interested in having to wait for office's IT to set it up for me (will take forever). Is there any way to make it work? The PC came with a 1TB with Windows 8.1 & I tried making it dual-bootable with easyBCD to no avail..

What are you trying to accomplish?  Is the old hd larger, or you want Windows 7?

You can't take a HD from one machine and stick it in another machine.  There are limited scenarios will it work seamlessly, and others where it will work with some work.  In your scenario it will take a lot of work - it would be quicker (and cleaner) to reinstall.

Not practical, but for educational purposes:  you could clone the machine and make it a VM and run it on the Windows 8 box.

Won't that slow everything down?

Update: I bought this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NRGT3Y8/ref=od_aui_detailpages00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and nothing happens when I plug it in. Any ideas?

Right click on your desktop and click screen resolution and there are options for dual monitors

It detects the second monitor, but the monitor displays nothing - just the default "self test feature check" that it shows when it's not plugged into anything.
