From what you are saying it sounds like a virus and has nothing to do with buying a $300 computer

I thought so too,  but wouldn't malwarebytes  find it?

In viruses almost nothing is guaranteed and if malware bytes was foolproof there would be no skill in removing viruses

Some other scans to try: adwcleaner, superantispyware, hittman pro, tdskiller
Workflowy. You won't know what you're missing until you try it.

Those work many times but still not guaranteed

No it may work

Ideally you backup all your data and reinstall windows especially if you have important data

Try them and see what happens. If that fails, and you can't reinstall windows for whatever reason, I'd try posting on bleepingcomputer.com. I've found them very helpful.

Or, worst case scenario, reformat the hard drive and start over.

Which still has the issue of losing all your programs etc. There are a few programs out there that only let you install them once per license you buy  ::)

Sometimes it's just easier. Besides, that's what torrents are for.

Using basic Gateway machine about two years old, W7.  About a week ago, developed some problem between chrome and K9.  Ended up deleting Chrome, and reinstalling.  Worked for a day.  Ended up deleting Chrome and using Firefox.  Worked for a day or two.  All along, the problems were mostly freezing while online and then dead, not even three finger salute.  Now, I can't do system restore, says I need to shut antivirus, which I do, but it still doesn't work, no matter which restore point I try I get the same message.  Now, it freezes almost immediately after a hard reboot.  Ran Defrag, CCleaner and Malwarebytes.  Got blue screen of death twice.  Machine ran the "dirty" clean once on its own.  Software, hardware?  Is this what I get for buying a $300 computer?  Thanks much.
Are you using K9?  Did you catch the error that the blue screen gave you?

My PC boots with NumLock off.
I know it's a BIOS setting, but I can't figure how to change it back.

Does it turn on with NumLock, but when it reaches Windows, shuts off?

No, it's off before I log in.

It was on I the past but I messed up somehow last month when I played around with the BIOS.

Did that, but couldn't get online at all.  Does safe mode allow online access?
