Restarting can help
When I did the first restart after turning off ipv6 I thought it worked for a second because the icon did not have a triangle and I believe there were some things in the window you get by clicking on the icon, but right away it reverted back to same problem.

At this point I am out of ideas, your best bet is getting on to wifi and running Windows update and hopeing it finds an update for the network adapter

I believe you mentioned before that there's a laptop that connects without issue. Please post the results of ipconfig /all on that laptop. Also, (on the one that doesn't connect) when you go to Network and Sharing > Change adapter settings > right click ethernet > properties > double click ipv4, is it set to "obtain an IP address automatically"?

I have a laptop that was working after this one stopped but now it has the same issue.  I haven't tried troubleshooting that one and it might work if I restart it now that I restarted the modem/ router.  The only computer that works now is a desktop.

I won't be home for 3 days so I will have to put this on hold. I will update you when I get home.

I got a "DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NO_INTERNET" 2 days ago and followed the instructions I found here of typing the commands below into the dos prompt and then restarting my computer.

ipconfig /release
ipconfig /all
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /renew

netsh int ip set dns
netsh winsock reset

It got the same error tonight, and again was able to solve the problem with the above. Any clue what might be causing this issue?
clean install or an upgrade to w10?
which filters (if any) do you have installed?
Clean install. Have WebChaver which uses Covenant eyes. Now am having additional issue...sometime I am unable to access google. I get message "www.google.com unexpectedly closed the connection
Try:
Reloading the page
Checking the connection
Checking the proxy and the firewall
ERR_CONNECTION_CLOSED
I am sometimes accused of overthinking things. I am still mulling over whether that accusation has merit.

For that reason I never updated to the latest ver.  I stayed with the old one

Your laptop is configured to get its IP v4 settings automatically from a DHCP server, but apparently those settings are not getting set. When the network adapter can't get settings from a DHCP server after a few seconds, Windows configures it with the autoconfiguration IP address 169.254.x.x.

I wonder if it would help if you would bypass DHCP by setting the IP v4 settings manually. To do so, you will need to know what the correct IP address, subnet mask, default gateway and DNS are to communicate properly. You can obtain this information by running the ipconfig /all command on another computer on the same network that can still connect to the internet. The subnet mask, default gateway and DNS addresses should match exactly, but the IP address should be different, as follows:
If the subnet mask, is 255.255.255.0, the IP address should be set the same, up until the last period. Following the period, use a number between 1 and 254 that is not already in use on your network. For example, don't use the address listed as the default gateway.

I just worked who knows how long on a document and while I was editing the final line "Microsoft Word has stopped working". It then restarted and it was lost. It's not among the unsaved documents. When I reopened word I saw the last autosave version in the recovery pane, but when I clicked on it it didn't allow me to open it because it was in use by "winword.exe" in another session (wherever that is). When I closed this error dialog box the doc disappeared from the recovery pane and is nowhere to be found. Is there any way I can recover this?

I am a little confused , on my working computer the ip is nothing like the subnet. You want me to make the new ip and new subnet similar and forget the ip from the working computer ( subnet 255.255.240.0, ip 255.255.240.1, see below)
I tried doing this and it didn't work "255 is not a valid entry, Please specify a value between 1 and 223" (by the ip address line).

This is the information from the working computer:

Hi,
Two weird things just started happening on my Win 10 laptop:
1 - the backspace key does not work to back up a page; it gives me a message to press alt-arrow.
2 - the on screen keyboard keeps popping up. I disabled it in windows settings, but that doesn't help.
Thanks.

The problem is that, unless you paid your ISP (Time Warner?) for more than one IP address, you will need to use a router if you want more than one computer to connect through your internet connection. Based on your IP settings that you posted, it appears that you connected your computer directly to the cable modem. You should instead plug the computers into the LAN ports of a router, plug the WAN port of the router into the cable modem, and then restart the cable modem.
