How does your posted Seagate Backup Plus Slim 1TB Portable External Hard Drive with Mobile Device Backup USB 3.0 (STDR1000100) - Black compare to Seagate Expansion 1TB Portable External Hard Drive USB 3.0 (STEA1000400)?So what do you recommend?
Nothing majorly different, the Backup Plus Slim is usually somewhat pricier but has some small advantages. (from here)
  • Form factor - Expansion drives are bulkier. Backup Plus drives are slimmer and more portable. Both come in both 3.5 and 2.5-inch models.
  • Software - The Backup plus line has its own Backup Software, providing automatic backups, scheduled backups etc. Whether this software is better than any of the many other similar utilities, I cannot say.
  • Warranty - The Backup Plus has a 3-year warranty, while the Expansion drives have a 2-year warranty. This may vary depending on where you buy it.
But another thing to take into account is that the -supposedly somewhat better- Backup Plus line wasn't updated since 2013, so the Expansion line -which is from 2015- does probably have improvements in terms of reliability etc.

Also had some Seagates die on me on much higher rate than the WD that I have. But from my experience, the old models of Seagate (named Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex, and released in 2010, I had it with this portable and this desktop model) were the ones that were bad, while the Seagate Expansion runs fine and I never had any problem with it.
Do you have reason to believe the newer Seagates are better? or just that your negative experience is with the old ones?
I am looking at the Seagate Backup Plus - Model: STDR1000100.
I am sometimes accused of overthinking things. I am still mulling over whether that accusation has merit.

There is definitely reason to believe that a company only improves as time goes by, and the manufacturing process gets more sophisticated. And as somewhat of a proof to that I see that the old ones (from 2010) that I had were really bad while with the newer ones (I think I have the Expansion drive from 2014) I had no problems.

My laptop's Wifi is acting weird. I can see all the possible connections except for my own. It simply doesn't come up when searching available networks. It's in close proximity and I have no problem connecting with my cellphone.

Windows 7? 8? 10?

Try this:
Open command prompt.  Enter:
Code: [Select]
netsh wlan show networks
Do you see your network now?  If yes, then I'd assume you have it saved with some wrong info.  Run:

Code: [Select]
netsh wlan show profilesDo you see it there?  If yes, do this (replace PROFILE NAME with your network name):

Code: [Select]
netsh wlan delete profile name="PROFILE NAME"
If you don't see it at the "show networks" stage; I'd assume either your wifi is broadcasting in a way your laptop cant see it (i.e. 5ghz).  Did it used to work?

On the Windows 7 machine, download this:
http://update7.simplix.info/UpdatePack7R2-16.10.16.exe

Rename it to:
UpdatePack7R2--ie11++.exe

Run it as administrator.  Let it finish.

Good to go.

That download failed  . What do I do now ?

Didn't come up.

It's Windows 10.
I just moved into a new office so it's a new network. It's a Verizon FiOS 100/100.

My assumption then is that maybe its broadcasting to 5ghz, or its AC and your wifi card doesnt support that.

So I'm basically stuck? Or is this something that I can do?

You can buy a USB stick that supports it.  You can ask them to change router settings to also support g or n bands.

I'm setting up a new Dell desktop. I'm not all that familiar with the specs since I didn't buy it, doing it as a favor. after the standard customize screen, got stuck on "just a moment" for an hour plus so far.
any advice?
ETA: spoke to Dell support (Philippines) walked me through a hard reset (most ridiculous way to trigger it, turn on and off the computer 3 times quickly so as to trigger a system recovery) and we're 4% in. hope this does it.

Anyone have experience using Time Boss as time limit program for internet usage?

Got stuck at 12%, ended up installing windows from a new boot drive,  which worked
