Does anyone here have experience with port forwarding. I'm trying to host a site locally that can be reached from outside of my network. so I added a port forwarding rule to my router that will fwd to my local machine. But I can't get it to work. Any input is appreciated. Thank you

I did port forwarding quite a few times, though never for a website.

Is the site running on a web server on your machine? Which server?

Have you forwarded port 80 TCP?

(BTW, hope you have a static LAN IP for this local machine. Also keep it in mind that your ISP might detect that you're hosting a site and it might not be allowed depending on your plan.)

I'm running it locally on IIS. I'm not forwarding to 80. I'm forwarding to the port that its being hosted, on IIS.
Yes have a static ip.

Does anyone know of specific reasons why a Windows (Win 10 now, but also with win 8 and 8.1) laptop won't go to sleep despite the settings to sleep after X minutes of inactivity? It's been annoying me for years now!

But you should forward port 80 requests coming to your router to go to your local address. Normal web page requests always come in to port 80.

normal requests only go to port 80 if you don't specify a specific port. However if one requests a specific port it would go to the port requested. For example lets say one requests ip address 14.131.55.178 than it would go to port 80, however if one requests 14.131.55.178:1234 then the computer should forward the request to port 1234

Remember seeing once such an issue being caused by network sharing or homegroup. Are you connected to a Homegroup?

Thanks for your reply. I was searching more online in the meantime, and came across to reset the windows firewall and that did the trick for me thanks anyways.

I don't think so. It's really a simple, standard setup with 4 different users that log in periodically. It just won't go to sleep (for either user, not even the administrator). I have to either manually put it to sleep or shut the lid (sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't).

[[meanwhile, my mac ALWAYS goes to sleep when it is supposed to]]

Oh, that's right wasn't clear that your trying the request with the port number directly.

A check for that port with http://www.canyouseeme.org finds it open?

Also you can try following the answer over here, two things that need to be set up in under for it to work, http://serverfault.com/a/363875

Can you first check to make sure that you aren't connected or haven't created a Homegroup? In Control Panel > Homegroup what does it say?

[[and so are my whole bunch of windows computers...]]

"This computer can't connect to a homegroup"
"! To create a homegroup ...."

This is a really basic computer I bought for my wife and kids to share for generic purposes. Google accounts, google docs, word/excel once in a while. Nothing fancy, except perhaps a dropbox account. No networked drives here, didn't even make my iTunes stuff networked yet. Took it out of the box, created logins, upgraded to 8.1 and then a few months ago upgraded to 10. Also nothing at all connected to it, it is standalone, no USB devices except mouse (a standard Microsoft usb mouse), we use the internal keyboard and screen. The brand is Toshiba Satellite.

Just now when I went to check the homegroup thing, the lid was shut, but it was still running (can tell by the LEDs and hear it sometimes).

You may try checking the solution here https://www.technipages.com/windows-10-pc-wont-go-to-sleep-mode. Is any of the devices set to Prevent?

Also, try running the command powercfg /requests in an Administrator command prompt, and see if reports any program or device that keeps your computer awake.

My current laptop (Toshiba C55-B5362 15.6" Notebook) has these specs:

*Intel Core i3-4005U 3M Cache, 1.70GHz processor
*4 GB RAM
*500 GB hard drive

It takes like 7 seconds for a Microsoft Word doc to open.

What specs should I get on a new laptop that it would open much faster?

Thanks

While it is very hard to say exactly what is causing it, I'd go up with all the specs if possible in your budget:
*i5 Processor
*8 GB RAM
*256 SSD

Also, take in mind that Word loading slowly isn't always the system specs at fault. It might be add-ons to Word that cause it. You can try checking this by running Word in Safe Mode (not the PC in safe mode, but the Word program) and see if in that way it does start fast. To start Word in Safe Mode search in Start for winword /safe and run the first result.

I have a Dell Vostro 230 desktop.

Processor:                    Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU   E8400  @3.00GHz  2.99 GHz
Installed memory(RAM):    4.00 GB 92.96 usable)
                                       32-bit operating system

Big issue: the sound will randomly stop working.  When 'troubleshooting' it says the speakers aren't plugged in. I tried the settings and it doesn't recognize that the speakers are attached.
To fix this, sometimes unplugging and replugging the speakers works. OR we reboot and usually that solves it.
This is driving us nuts and I'm ready to buy a new computer.

2nd problem: extreme slowness. randomly comes on and for no apparent reason, last a little while,  then computer returns to its usual OK speed.
My favorite cause: cssy.org
