A coworker's computer got one of those popups that says the computer is infected and you need to call "Microsoft". Restarting the computer got the message to go away B"H.

I'm running a virus scan, if that comes back clean then do you think that's enough? Or do we need to reinstall Windows just to be sure the computer is safe to use?

Thanks!

It's fine, as long as nothing on the pop-up was clicked and you had an av running at the time. (I've had users that called the "support" # that showed!)

Next time you only need to kill the process of the browser, no need for a full restart.

If it's not free shipping it's not worth it.

Thanks! I would have killed the process but the user wasn't onsite and I didn't think it would work over the phone :). B"H they knew better than to call the #!

Looks like the only antivirus at the time was Windows Defender. Was that enough?

Windows 10 computer stopped booting one day. It gets to the Windows logo and spinning wheel and freezes there. I tried booting into the Windows 10 install USB to try system restore or 'Last Known Good Configuration' but startup freezes when booting into USB as well (also on Windows logo with spinning wheel freezing.) I tried booting into a Windows 7 install USB to try and wipe the hard drive and install Windows 7 over it but the boot also froze when trying to boot into the Windows 7 USB. (See attached pictures of where boot freezes when booting into the computer, or Windows 10 install USB, or Windows 7 install USB.)

Anyone know how to resolve this? I can't even wipe the drive and reinstall because I can't boot into Windows installation media.

On a new asus windows 10 laptop, every 10 min or so of idling it shuts off totally, and i need to power it up to start it again. There must be a setting to make it only sleep and not need to be powered on, i just can't figure out where that is. Any help is appreciated

That it goes to sleep after 10 minutes. Does sleep mean that i need to power it up?

There are two settings there, one for screen and one for sleep.

Sleep does not power it Off completely (all open programs are not open when you start it back?) but if for some reason that is the case for you (either your computer has an issue coming out of Sleep, or you don't know how to wake it up) I would set Sleep when Plugged in to Never.

It doesn't turn it off completely, just more than just a snooze.
Thanks!

I would think that this is the normal sleep and what you really want is just screen Turn Off.

So set Sleep (at least when plugged in) to Never, and Screen Turn Off to 10-15-30 minutes.

Did you sign in / register the excel on your new one?

Most computers don't come with an Office license unless you paid for it..

I'm trying to record a voicemail greeting for Google Voice, using my bluetooth earpiece which is connected to my computer. Google says that no microphones are connected. When I open Sound settings and look at the Recording tab, I don't see my device listed there (though it shows in the Playback tab).

Any advice?

Thanks!

Update: went to dell.com and downloaded a few updated drivers, and that seems to have fixed the problem B"H

Next question (different computer :) ):

I reinstalled windows on a 1 year old laptop, installed windows updates, Chrome, and Avast, and am trying to figure out why it's running slowly. I just turned it on and nothing is running, but Task Manager shows Disk as 100%. Any ideas why that could be? Right now the top items in that column are Service Host: Local System, System, and Google Chrome Installer.
