Im currently using a family members computer, it's slow like a turtle, takes 10 minutes to start up, what should I look for or can be the cause for this problem?

And even when the computer is on, it's working really slow, 5 minutes to open a browser.
Thought maybe the computer is jammed with storage or something to that effect but it shows there's 1.7TB free of 1.8TB.

Open task manager and see if the ram is maxed out? Or CPU for that matter.
Also if you hear clicking or grinding noises that could be the hard drive dying, so I'd rush to back everything up (either way backing up is always a good idea)

What's this Java auto updater that keeps on popping up?

Probably not necessary, if it was my computer I'd uninstall it. (There are probably lots of other things to uninstall but if it's not your computer...??)

It's a relative, doesn't know the first thing about computers, if I knew what I can uninstall I would.

There is nothing running in the background.

Dell Inspiron 14 7460 power issue:

Issue: when computer is off, power button does nothing to start it.

Can only get computer to start by removing back cover and battery, holding power for 30 sec, plugging in AC power, pushing power button 2 or 3 times until it starts. Then I can reconnect the battery. Computer works fine otherwise.

I can even use the restart command from the start menu and it works fine (shuts down and restarts).

I replaced the main battery as well as the button battery. Did not correct the issue.

Do i need to replace the power button board? is this possibly a software issue?

Maybe it is an issue waking up from Fast Startup (which is a somewhat-shutdown that is usually the default for Windows 10 devices).

You can test it by shutting Off completely using
Code: [Select]
shutdown /s /f and then see if the Power button works.

Nope still not working.

I just realized that the USB jack that is part of the on button board does not work either. (other ones are fine)

Funny thing is that the On button does work when i do the whole take out battery/drain power routine..

Do you think I need a new on button board?

Thanks!

I'm trying to do the opposite.

Is there any way to disable the power button from working to turn off the computer while the computer is on? Some type of script / utility, not disconnecting any wiring.

Kid loves pressing the lit up button. Will try electric tape to cover it, but little fingers will likely try and pull that off too "hey, extra toy here".

You should be able to change the Power Button behavior in the Control Panel Power Options settings:

That’s only for single / short press, not when toddler holds down button for 4-5 seconds when you walk out the room.

From all the research I’ve done, seems like it’s a hardware thing, so wouldn’t work for what I want.

Correct, the 5-second long-press power Off is a physical low-level hardware thing, and therefore certainly no way to bypass in software.

I'm having trouble connecting a headphone to my desktop pc.

I currently have speakers (internal monitor speakers) connected to one of the ports on the back. I don't know the exact name for it but I think it's the speaker out jack.

If I plug in a headphone on the front of my pc into either the headphone or headphone/mic combo jack I get this pop up (blue square in screenshot) asking me to choose what type of device i plugged in. I choose headphones and it's recognized in the software that something is plugged into the front (small blue rectangle).

But still the headphones don't work, it still only plays out of the speakers.

Try right-clicking on the volume icon in the taskbar and clicking Open Sound Settings. Then see if you can change the device to your headphones.

What device name does it show? Is it the headphones or the computer speakers?

Also, have you tried another pair of headphones in case those don't work?
