Are there still people around who can fix a computer by opening it up, buying needed parts, soldering them in place? If so, what are these people called, and how would I find one?
A few weeks ago, my laptop crashed. Literally. Onto a hard tile floor. I had tripped on the charger cord, and we both went down. We both worked fine afterwards, for a while.
But the pin on the charging cable was bent at an angle. It can be inserted into the port, but soon that area of the computer gets very hot, and when I remove the metal pin it's scorching hot. That can't be good, right? I bought a new charger, same thing happens. Maybe the port got messed up when it fell? Would this be a good idea to try to replace? I see from some cool youtube videos that it can be done in about 6 minutes.
I got a recommendation for a hardware fixit guy, but he says he'll only try to replace the battery. He doesn't do anything that requires buying new parts and soldering.
I'm pretty peeved, because my previous laptops all lasted 4-6 years, and I bought this just 15 months ago, so just a few months out of warranty. It's an Acer Swift 3, was $520. Acer offered to fix it if I mail it to them, for $360. What do you guys think?
