I have a Dell laptop that I use with a dock (for 2 monitors, keyboard, and ethernet). Occasionally when I unplug it from the doc, the laptop's keyboard and trackpad don't work at all. Only the touchscreen works and when I use it to restart the laptop, it works fine. Does that mean it's not a hardware issue (since restarting fixes it)? Any advice how to troubleshoot?
TIA

Correct, probably not a hardware issue.

Thanks! So this is slightly different, when I plug the dock back in the keyboard works, but the built in keyboard doesn't work until I restart. It doesn't happen every time but often...

Wondering if I should file an amex extended warranty claim and see what they say (I'm almost at the deadline for that)

Try reinstalling the docks drivers.

There may be a setting to disable trackpad when external one is connected (check trackpad settings), make sure all your drivers are up to date. You can also check the bios for perhaps a similar setting. Otherwise I don't know.

The problem isn't when it's connected, the problem is that when I disconnect the dock, occasionally the trackpad and keyboard don't start working again. Drivers are up to date.

Right I got that, me thinks it has something to do with the dock taking over your trackpad and keyboard settings.

Which makes sense, but shouldn't it "un-take over" when it's unplugged?

Also, sometimes it works fine, it's hit or miss with this issue.

"Leave touchpad on when mouse is connected" is on, I don't see anything else relevant.

I don't know you can try playing with the settings, did you check your BIOS settings? Also does it matter which port you plug the dock into?
