I have a cable modem and a separate wireless router. When using that setup, my speed takes a huge hit from 23 mbps with a wired connection down to 3.5 mbps with WIFI connection.
I'm wondering if there is a way to have the router connected so that I can use WIFI for my smartphone, but also have a wired connection from the modem directly to laptop so as to achieve max speed. The modem has only one ethernet port. Any suggestions how I can connect both router and laptop directly into modem? TIA

Buy a cheap ethernet switch.

Reboot into Safe Mode (press F8 as it boots up until you see a boot menu, then select Safe Mode), and see if it still asks for a password. If yes, there should be another hidden account called Administrator, which only show when you boot into Safe Mode. See if you can log into that account and delete the password of the main account.

Like this one? Will it allow both the wifi and wired laptop to use internet simultaneously?

What slows down?  The wired or wireless?

When I connect the wireless router and use wifi, the speed slows down drastically. When I skip the router and connect laptop directly to modem, speed shoots way up.

Yes, but you don't need something with so many ports. Look for a switch with like 4 or 5 ports, it will be much cheaper.

Thanks. That amazon link has options to choose how many ports. The one with 5 ports costs $34.99. Is that reasonable?

It is a wireless issue.  What kind of wireless adapter is on the laptop?  Have you tried other wireless devices?

It needs to be on a bootable cd or usb.  You can try AnonymousUser's suggestion, but with Windows 8 (7 too, CMIIW) the admin account is disabled by default.

Just to clarify, I should connect the switch to the modem, and then connect the laptop and router to the switch?

I should add, when on wifi, according to speedtest.net, my upload speed is 4.74 mbps while download speed is 3.5 mbps or less. Isn't that bizzare?

I once tried that, ended up needing a router for my OBI, something to do with the switch not assigning IP addresses...
I defer to the experts.

Please clarify - what did you attempt and did it work or not?

I cant really explain it though...
