It depends on your modem/service.  The modem, b'derech klal must be in front of the router.

Reboot into Safe Mode (press F8 as it boots up until you see a boot menu, then select Safe Mode), and see if it still asks for a password. If yes, there should be another hidden account called Administrator, which only show when you boot into Safe Mode. See if you can log into that account and delete the password of the main account.
Thank you but it's a no go, as mentioned above.

There are a number of free tools you can download.  Here is one I have used numerous times.
http://pogostick.net/~pnh/ntpasswd/
Thank you will try it soon.

Thanks alot.
Just to clarify, I should connect the switch to the modem, and then connect the laptop and router to the switch?
1.  As I posted above, putting a switch in front of the wireless router, and behind the modem, may not work.  Your modem may be only able to give one IP.
2.  You wireless issue will remain.  What router are you using?  If possible, try another wireless device and see if the problem persists.  This will determine if the issue is with the router or laptop.

The age alone should not be an issue (it is an N, not B).  The first step is troubleshooting where the problem comes from.  You have already determined that it is not the internet by plugging in directly to the modem.  So we know it is wireless.  Next is to determine if it is the router or the laptop.  My guess is the router (not necessarily broken physically,  it may be in the settings).  Try to test with another wireless device.

Does it happen immediately upon boot?  Or only after a while?  It can be any number of problem.  Does it feel hot?

Not especially hot. Can be immediate as well on occasion.

Usually there is no immediate,  quick fix.  You can blow some air, to ensure the fan is not clogged.   Then try to disable programs from your startup, remove AV (temporarily), etc.

A little OT:
Where can I get a cheap decent router to do a setup similar to George's?

Update: I have no idea why, but my speed problems went away, hopefully for good. I plugged the router into the modem, then direct ethernet from router into laptop, and speed is as high as ever. Wifi on smartphone is only a drop slower. BH.

True, but I tested laptop with wifi and it was only a drop slower. (20 mbps instead of 23 mbps). I think that's normal. I plugged in direct ethernet just to have the extra bit of speed and, perhaps, stability.

Yeah sometimes these things just need to restart.

Not what you want.

ETA - That link is for a modem/router.  Although you technically could only use the wireless capabilities and add it to your current network, if you don't know what you are doing, I wouldn't recommend it.
