I don't understand your comparison to a Mac, as I've haven't really used one. :)
My question is: Is it possible to install Office from the program files?
That's all that's left after installing newer Windows.
When you say the "progam files", do you mean the files on your c: drive, under "Program Files", or "Program Files (x86)"?  If that is what you mean, then no, you cannot reinstall Office from those files.

You installed, or you had someone else install?  I assume (from the fact that you are asking this question) that you did a "new" install and not an upgrade.

Yup, I did an install.
It was running XP. I installed Vista and then upgraded to 7.
While on the subject, how to get rid of all the junk. The hard drive should have been clean, but is now showing more than half full.

I assume that you probaby did not format the drive first.  If you have not done too much on your new install, IMO, I would start from scratch again, this time making sure you FORMAT.  Why XP-Vista-7?  Why not just 7 right away?  Was it only an upgrade license?

Its an upgrade-from-Vista CD.
I should format C, and then start anew (with Vista)?

If you have a full Vista install license, and media, and you did not do too much work on your "new" system, then yes.  I assume, of course, that you either do not need, or have backed up all of the data from this computer.

CD / DVD / 3.5" / 5.25" / ZIP / DAT / etc
There must be something on it, other than the OS, if half of the drive is in use.  What is the hd capacity?

Media is, for example a cd disk, or a dvd disk.

Oh. I was thinking down the wrong "path".
I have an installation disk, that's all.

I think a clean install (i.e. with a format), should leave you with around 30 gig or so, before you install other programs, or update Windows.

Is the disk enough?
The HD is really 40gb, but comes up as 37.

It should be fine for a Windows install and a few programs.  I would not go loading it up with pictures, video, or music, though.

I meant the installation CD. Is that enough to install Windows on the formatted drive?
