Should I push the fix now button on the PC Analyzer?
It won't help you all that much.  Like DH said, it will be an investment of time on your part.  If you want to proceed, ask your brother for the CD to wipe the drive clean.  Feel free to munn me about the RAM.

Before a reformat, maybe try this to see if it makes things faster.

Download CCleaner:
www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download/standard

1. Run the "Cleaner". (button on the bottom right - "Run Cleaner")
2. Go to Registry on the left, press "Scan for issues".  When it finishes, hit "Fix Selected Issues". (press yes at backup, save that file anywhere), then hit "Fix All Selected Issues".

Then, download Malwarebytes:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/malwarebytes-anti-malware/dl/7/

Install normally.  Make sure to UNCHECK "Enable free trial of Pro version" at the end of installation.  (keep "update" and "run" checked).
Once it's opened, do a quick scan.  When it finishes (hit show results), make sure everything is checked, and press "Remove Selected".

IMO, since there is no data to be backed up, and no settings to keep, a format/reinstall would take the same time as the above.  You are right if it would be time consuming because of data or settings.  Not the case here.

Didn't know any of the above was true.  Maskim all the way.
Though, I'd recommend first installing:
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/device_manager_view.html
and Save it (as HTML or whatever), so that we can get you the correct drivers after reinstall.

I believe your system can take 16GB max.
Upgraded from 12GB to 16GB.
Incredible difference in speed!
Seems to have eliminated the lag caused by all my tabs.

I'm not DH, but I hope you permit me to answer.

1. With chkdsk, did you run it with the /r switch?
2. Windows expects the drive to be ready after hibernation within 10 seconds. If it's not ready by then, as can happen with large drives, it will give you that stop error. Download this KB hotfix (KB977178) from microsoft, install it, and report back.

1. I ran chkdsk from tools tab in properties in c: drive. Do i need to run it from command line?
2. I saw that already but I think it's for large SATA drives and I have a small ssd drive-should I try it anyways?

He's running an SSD drive, his drive is ready faster than a regular drive - I doubt the issue is faulty ssd.

Thought that as well, but it's just a kb, couldn't hurt trying.

Blue screen view might help you analyse the dump file to pinpoint the problem.

I guess. But the computer is already in BSOD even before I try and wake it-it pops up immediately

If you shut down and start over you should be able to get to the desktop. Just hold the power button for a few seconds until it turns off.

Huh? I thought you were saying that you can't install the KB because it's in blue screen.

Nope. I was saying that I don't think what you said is the problem because it enters blue screen immediately when I wake it up with no delay
