Yes.
See for yourself:
http://support.asus.com/ServiceHome.aspx?SLanguage=en

Go to download driver.  Put in your laptop model.  Select W7 64 as OS.  go to BIOS utilities.
"Sorrry, this program only supports ASUS notebook!"

Install this first http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/Drivers/ATKPackage/ATKPackage_Win7_64_Z100020.zip
Asus doesn't recognize itself until after installing that.

Is it possible that this one was the issue?

Yup.  Asus doesn't work the way it should without that installed.. (LiveUpdate won't install either, etc)
Although it just as well may have been the chipset, IRST, or Intel drivers for SSD.

That should say DanH, but for some reason it autocorrected and now I can't edit it.

I put the new HD in the enclosure and then booted to the PE, just in case there were any files locked by Windows.
The clone operation took a while, but once it finished it only took a few minutes to swap the HDs. Windows didn't even notice the difference, except that now I have a bigger HD. :)

It won't help you all that much.  Like DH said, it will be an investment of time on your part.  If you want to proceed, ask your brother for the CD to wipe the drive clean.  Feel free to munn me about the RAM.

Before a reformat, maybe try this to see if it makes things faster.

Download CCleaner:
www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download/standard

1. Run the "Cleaner". (button on the bottom right - "Run Cleaner")
2. Go to Registry on the left, press "Scan for issues".  When it finishes, hit "Fix Selected Issues". (press yes at backup, save that file anywhere), then hit "Fix All Selected Issues".

Then, download Malwarebytes:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/malwarebytes-anti-malware/dl/7/

Install normally.  Make sure to UNCHECK "Enable free trial of Pro version" at the end of installation.  (keep "update" and "run" checked).
Once it's opened, do a quick scan.  When it finishes (hit show results), make sure everything is checked, and press "Remove Selected".

IMO, since there is no data to be backed up, and no settings to keep, a format/reinstall would take the same time as the above.  You are right if it would be time consuming because of data or settings.  Not the case here.

Didn't know any of the above was true.  Maskim all the way.
Though, I'd recommend first installing:
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/device_manager_view.html
and Save it (as HTML or whatever), so that we can get you the correct drivers after reinstall.
Thanks guys. I just didn't  have time to do anything about my computer yet. I did ask my brother for the cd but he has to look for it. However I do have data (files pics and other random stuff) that I don't want to lose so should I rather run Ccleaner and malawarebytes?

Use DanH's suggestions.  If it does not improve enough, then backup and reformat.

Now what about adding ram?
crucial.com
4allmemory.com
Then go to amazon, etc. to see if you can get better pricing.  IMO, if the price difference is not so much, I would stick with crucial, since they have a guarantee.

You can do this to backup your activation:
http://netsecurity.about.com/od/windowsxp/qt/aaqtwinxp0829.htm

and then use this to re-install XP:
https://thepiratebay.pe/torrent/9044043/

or original from microsoft:
Code: [Select]
mediafire.com/download/3444ds045648463/en_windows_xp_home_with_service_pack_3_x86_cd_x14-92413-MSDNAA.iso(password is MSDNAA). Make sure your browser has ad-blocking..

You're talking about the virus definition update for malwarebytes? Some viruses will block the software from downloading it, you can download it manually from here or here.

Three of the 13 malicious software found is not automatically selected for removal like the others.
PUP.ProtectedSearch (x2)
PUP.Optional.ProtectedSearch
Should I select these manually?

I usually do, unless you recognize the file as something you installed specifically.
