i5 should be just fine you can always buy another chip of ram for $40-50 and ssd is not a must although always a plus
Which would make a bigger difference? i7 or SSD?

Which model i7?  Any of the U series - just go with SSD instead.

I wonder what people who type "u" instead of "you" do with all their free time.

Would it be a big deal to switch the HDD in this
http://www.ebay.com/itm/291286899456

for this one?
http://www.amazon.com/Crucial-2-5-Inch-adapter-Internal-CT240M500SSD1/dp/B00BQ8RM1A/ref=dp_ob_title_ce
as a general rule anything that's commonly replaced is easy to access including ram and hard drives as apposed to the network card for example that can be buried inside somewhere so i can't answer for sure but chances are it's just a few screws

I think that it actually is a bit of a pain because you need to clone the HD to get the OS onto it

It's pretty easy if you know what to do.

Emails that come in to my outlook change to read within minutes of they're arriving. This is obviously extremely annoying. Google hasn't been much help thus far.

imap email setup with rackspace email. Anyone got any suggestions?

My wife's computer is having a strange issue. She started having wifi connection issues, so I tried everything I could think of: disconnecting and reconnecting, turning the wireless card on and off, rebooting, ipconfig /renew, reinstalling K9, uninstalling K9. Nothing was working, but all other devices on the network worked fine.
ipconfig shows an IP address. Pinging Google usually times out, but sometimes gets a response. Windows shows a wifi connected icon in the system tray.
The strange thing is, sometimes it would just work perfectly.
Eventually, I narrowed it down, and it seems that when the laptop is plugged in it works fine, and the issues only occur when it's running off the battery.
The laptop is a Dell Vostro 3750, around 3-4 years old. The battery capacity seems pretty good, it can last several hours on a single charge. Is it possible that the capacity didn't degrade, but the ability to output the required voltage did, and as a result there isn't enough voltage being generated to fully power the wireless card?

What are the power settings of the Laptop?  Try setting it to High performance.  Also, go into advanced options, and turn off the power-saving for attached devices and internet cards (iirc).
Also, did you try installing latest drivers?

I turned off the power saving mode, and that seems to have worked.
Thanks.

Somebody tried to shut it down, but it wouldn't shut down so I turned the power switch off & back on. Now the computer won't start up, this is all I see.

What do I do now?

Not since I powered off. This is the only thing that displays.

Try removing all RAM except one card.  Keep swapping them until you find the wrong one.  It's possible it's the CPU or HDD, but try this first.
