Depending on what machine you use, I have spoken with high level reps at HP,
Epson and Canon all have told me clearly that third party inks will cause print head blockage and shorten life span of printer big time.

I bought refillable cartridges and ink from http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=bl_sr_office-products?_encoding=UTF8&field-brandtextbin=double2house&node=1064954 and they have been great. Once i got the hand of it, it's very easy to refill and costs a fraction of the price of regular ink. It is actually cheaper per page to print with my inkjet and these inks than with a laser printer.

I too refill my cartridges, it comes out way cheaper and I have not encountered any problems.

I believe i saw an article on Yahoo comparing OEM vs Compatible toners. IIRC the difference (or one of) was that the ink would fade depending on where the paper was placed (window with direct sunlight, drawer...). In the end it was if you were using it in an office for regular day to day stuff, you should be fine with the compatible.
Feel free to CMIIW or if you saw differently.

Since last July.  Haven't printed photos with them so I can't comment on that quality. I have an Epson Workforce 845.

Good to know epson is very against it claiming it will kill printer as of trainings with them however that could be cause they have a vested interest.

Bought a printer here in IL (before my ddf days. I overpaid for a printer which the ink was discontinued) i ordered ink on eBay (refill), but the chip didnt match to my printer. (Even though Hp told me to buy this specific number. I took off the old chips and put it on the new refil inks NAND they match up. Besides one chip i broke....

I've used off-brand ink cartridges for Canon and Epson printers.  It's ok, but definitely not the same sharp quality as the originals.

i was doing fine with them for a while, but right now my printer wont recognize one of the colors.
even if i put a diff color there that is recognized in its original spot
prob is that nothing will print with one color missing

They wont print if one color is missing.
I wish there was a printer that would not hold you hostage to buy their inks for life....

That's why you always find awoke deals on printers. Cuz 2 rounds of ink refills practically costs more than the printer itself.

A couple days ago canon was offering thru some retailers the canon pro 100 an awesome $500 dollar printer for $429 plus $300 dollar mail in rebate at $129 that's a loss to them but they're counting on you buying there liquid gold.

If it was easy to use off brand ink the printers would cost double the price. I work for a company that all we do is sell printers and ink (though a different kind of printer and ink then anyone here buys) We dont sell any off brand ink because its such a small niche market its just not worth it. But some off brand ink is made in the same factory as the OEM ink
