LONDON: Best Hyatt or Starwood Hotel for Points Redemption
« on: April 23, 2013, 11:25:02 AM »
What is the best Hyatt or Starwood hotel to use points in London?

What I'm looking for is the best value per point spent, similar to how Dan considers the Park Hyatt in Paris Vendôme to be one of the best hotel redemptions.

Should I simply compare the advertised rate for the room vs the point redemption?

Does anyone here have some experience with these hotels?

Hyatt Regency London - The Churchill
Andaz Liverpool St

Sheraton Park Tower
W London
Meridien Picadilly
Park Lane Hotel
Lanesborough St Regis

I remember when a coke was a nickel, and you could buy VRs in OD.

You should look for the nicest hotel with the best reviews.
Then look at price and see if you'll get your moneys worth on a points redemption. If not pay cash
The Hyatt Churchill is very conveniently located to a shul and very doable on shabbos. But it is not luxurious

I stayed at the Le Meridian Picadilly for a night using C&P. It was the best value I found. It's right near a tube stop so it's super easy to get to/from LHR (the line that goes to LHR stops in Picadilly, no changing trains).

It's not near shuls or kosher restaurants, but a Tesco around the corner sells kosher prepared sandwiches. I wasn't there for shabbos so it didn't matter to me. It's right in the middle of the West End, also right near bus tour starting points.

I'm staying for just under 24 hours to avoid the APD. What should my itinerary be? Never been there before.

I do have to check in to the hotel before doing anything because we will have luggage as it is on the way to a 2 week Israel trip.

I was also there on a less-than-24-hour on the way back from TLV.  I don't know if you have kids with you, but without it will be much easier.

I arrived and left at night, so I got to the hotel, went to sleep, and had the whole day the next day to go around.  I took a bus tour of the city (one of the hop on/hop off ones, I believe it was The Original Tour).  I got off to see the London Eye (not worth it) and the Tower of London (worth it).  If I could do it again I'd stop at the London Dungeon which I've heard is really good.  I was on the bus (and at the attractions) from 8:00am to 3:00pm.  I had plenty of time and did not feel rushed.

Check availability for C&P and Le Meridian Piccadilly.  It makes getting to the city super easy, cheap, and quick from LHR.  Also, the hotel can probably hold your luggage for you if you need them to either before you check in or after you check out.

You would shlep luggage on the tube? I tried that in Venice to avoid the ridiculously expensive water taxis. It did not work out well. The vaporettos took forever and didn't even make it all the way to the Danieli (it's supposed to) because of America's Cup, which was running at the time. We ended up shlepping the luggages and carry-ons up and down footbridges of Venice.

It wasn't all my luggage just a wheeling carry on. I was on a stop over. Also, the tube station is in the airport.

You should be able to have your luggage checked through when you check in in your origin city. I was in London for 21.5 hours and they held the luggage at the airport during that time.

Hmm, I wonder if I could do that. I am flying UA into LHR and LH out.

When do your flights get into and leave from LHR?

You'll have no problem getting to the city from LHR, the problem is getting back for a 6:00 am departure as the tube doesn't open till 6:00 am.  You can take a bus, but I don't know much about how that works.

Sleep in an airport hotel

I didn't want to but now that you mention it, probably makes a lot of sense.

Sleep in an airport hotel

+1 seems to make the most sense.
