Lawn Advice
« on: April 29, 2013, 11:44:37 AM »
Does anyone know of a good grass-seed that really works? Most seed gets eaten by the animals in my backyard...
The only green in my backyard is weeds, the mud is really dry and full of broken bottles and other nasty things. I moved last summer and really want to clean up my lawn without spending too much.
The landscaper wants $650 to put out new sod. I want to do the lawn myself, and cheap!

Any garden experts out there?

I'd pay the landscaper (if he's a good one), you cant beat the job of an experienced one.
Does your lawn have full accesses to natural sunshine?
Love me or hate me. I still love you.

It really is hard not to say something. Maybe a few second delay should be instituted before posting in addition to having spell check in the subject line.

IME the only way to get grass to grow is if you buy a product like This. Its a grass seed mixture with lots of fertilizer, its basically on steroids. Thing is, its expensive but it will grow.
Just putting down plain seeds and praying is a waste of time. Figuring out the right amounts and type's of fertilizer is not nogeya....

If I buy on Amex and it doesn't work do you think I can have it refunded?

I was not trying to highlight anyone's miscues, especially with how trivial your typo was. Was merely trying to relate to the fact of seeing something and not saying anything.

So that seems like it might be my best bet.. Do I need to change all the soil in the yard?

it is a mulch, seed and fertilizer mixture so you shouldnt need to change the soil, it would help if you raked up the glass/leaves and possibly put down a pre-emergence weed killer that is safe for newly seeded lawns...

Just an FYI, a lot of local municipalities offer free mulch this time of year, especially after Sandy.
(They mulch up all the trees they collect during the winter and storms)

Black dirt, good grass seed and water every day.
Only on DDF does 24/6 mean 24/5/half/half

Depends where you live. I know the local town pools in Monsey have piles of mulch where you can come 'claim' if you like. You can also Google something like 'free mulch municipal (+ zip)' for more info from a local municipality.
