The search feature seems to only work in list mode. Once I have all my particulars filtered, only then do I end up with successful map view. Is that accurate?

One thing I found was that VRBO is much more amenable to price negotiation than airbnb. You can easily email a whole bunch of property owners with an offer, where as airbnb isn't really set up to do that. I've been able to get beautiful homes for less than half the price listed in VRBO during the offseason (summer in Central America). I've also been flatly turned down by everyone when trying to negotiate during the regular season, so this seems to only work if you're in a time of really low occupancy.
As for reliability, I've only had one bad deposit return experience in 10 years of VRBO rentals all over Europe and Central America, although keep in mind they don't have much insight or control over an outright attempt to scam. I feel like you take a little more risk with them over airbnb, but in exchange can get better deals.

What's the difference between vrbo and home away?

Same company (one bought the other), different website. Slightly different inventory, but not enough so that you have to look through both IMO. Easier searching on HA as well (IMO).

Separate reviews for the same property, so for that I always check both.

This is very true.  Airbnb views itself as a full blown booking service and VRBO et al is a listing service,  therefore negotiations are more of an option

VRBO/AirBNB/Flipkey have locations almost everywhere.
Choose a location or two w/ a shul, and then search for a property.

as it needs to be walking distance for shabbos my options are extremely limited. it literally needs to be within two miles of a shul and to search for that is nearly impossible

pick a place and search. Assuming you're nor interested in monsey brooklyn lkwd passaic, you've narrowed it down greatly (check tannersville, ny. There are quite a few options there)

interestingly enough, it seems that i was the last one to post here last year.
anyhow... has anyone found the search engine on vrbo to be off? ive come across several scenarios
a) the search without filters does not bring up certain properties that will come up with filters
b) the search bar does not allow me to search by description like secluded, pool...
c) when searching with filter it doesnt filter properly e.g.  filter for pool and non-pool options show up
any ideas for a more fruitful search?
