I get it. You want to spend some time on Caye Caulker and some time on Ambergis. I thought you just were going to Ambergis.

Why do you want to switch islands? They both have the same activities.
I figured caye caulker to be a little quieter and Ambergis to be more active and more interesting for shabbos.

Cute cheshbon.

Do you know yet where you're staying on both?

I did shabbos on caye caulker. Spent most of friday night drinking rum, and then most of shabbos day wandering around the island. After several hours, we were pretty bored. You can see crocodiles (or is it alligators) down by the garbage dump, so we started to walk there, but then decided it felt like we were getting far from the settled area and got worried about tchum.

So ambergis might have more place to wander on shabbos. Shabbos in nowhere is always a bit boring. Just make sure to not run out of rum.

Off to Belize next week! Spending 2 days there, one off Caye Caulker to snorkel and dive / snorkel with the manta rays and nurse sharks (they are not dangerous for those who were wondering) and another day inland to tour the Tikal ruins in Guatemala.

I wouldn't.  I'd wouldn't want to stay in the cities; I'd want to stay out on the Cayes.

Any particular reason not to stay at in the cities?

Thinking about booking Club Carlson BOGO at Radisson to dive the Blue Hole...

Anybody ever stayed at the Radisson in Belize?

AJK - don't stay in the cities - I beg you. Belize city is not the kind of city you will want to stay in. The areas in the city aren't that safe for tourists and unless you just stay in your hotel room it's not worth it. The Caye's have a great island vibe - no shoes, lots of beer and just really relaxed. Caye Caulker IIRC doesn't even have any cars just golf carts to get around.

What's your plan in terms of itinerary? Are you going inland? - you really should consider it if you have the time.

I value your opinion, and as such will stay away from the city :)

Just in the beginning stages of planning, nothing even remotely concrete yet. The one thing I really want to do, the impetus behind the trip, is to dive the great blue hole.

I'm glad you trust my opinion - good judgment call  ;)

The blue hole is definitely a good reason to go - definitely a Mecca of sorts for divers! And a lot closer then Sipidan... I didn't make it there although I would like to return someday to dive there. Belize is a great county and they speak English which makes everything a lot easier.

What did you end up doing while there? How long did you spend?

I was there for 2.5 days - day 1 we hired a private charter to meet us in the airport and take us to Caye Caulker - was around 30 min or so by speedboat. We hung out there and then the charter took us diving in the Hol Chan marine reserve. We saw large schools of fish aside from the standard Moray eels etc. We dove through an underwater tunnel and enjoyed the great underwater scenery there. We then went to shark ray alley where we went snorkeling with nurse sharks while the guides were chumming in the water. They don't let diving at that site. Probably around 20 sharks all around us - many of them I would say were 10 ft. plus. We then went back to Caye Caulker to catch the sunset and walk around before being brought back to Belize city. The boat ride in the dark was really cool. IIRC we paid for the private charter around 300.We then drove from Belize city to San Ignacio.

Day 2 we went to Tikal in Guatemala - also paid a private driver to take us - really cool ruins all surrounded by the jungle. Huge pyramids and all. We also went to a couple of fishing villages in the area and watched people do laundry in the local lake. We then went back to our hotel for the night. I don't recall name of hotel but can look it up if you'd like.

Day 3 we went to the Belize zoo which has native Belize animals in the natural surrounding before flying home.

All in all it was a great trip and I would definitely recommend.
