Local Israeli Health plans
•   MSG - https://www.msgil.com/student-service-plans - Starting at $795  for student plans (i.e. full school year)
•   AIM - https://www.aim.co.il/  AMERICAN ISRAEL MEDI-PLAN. INC. Plans start at $5/day, or $695-$1000 for student plans
•   Chai Travel Assistance Services. https://www.ctas.co.il/tourist-quote-medical.asp Site in English. Easy quick online quote. Price ~$1150 for 9.5 months (full school year) (~$4/day). Policy issued by Harel. Egert & Cohen Insurance.
•   Sasson Chacoty – Insurance Agency https://www.chacoty.co.il/en/insurance/tourist-insurance/ (they refer to health insurance for tourists as “tourist insurance”, have plans with Harel). Need to request a quote.
•   https://www.harel-group.co.il/ - Israel company. Site is in Ivrit.

Kupot Cholim:
•   The vast majority of people in Israel have Bituach Leumi, which pays for Kupot cholim. It's not an option, it's pretty much mandatory by law for citizens (and anyone else working in the country).
Foreign students (and some other visa categories) are eligible to apply for Bituach Leumi after being in the country for six months, processing time can be a month or so more.

Kupot Cholim are roughly equivalent to an HMO.
There are Four Kupot: Clalit, Meuhedet, Leumit, and Macabi.
The services conveniently available from the kupot vary depending on location. For example, Maccabi does not have many locations in JLM, while Meuhedet has tons - even it's own outpatient hospital facility for procedures under anesthesia

Some of the kupot cholim offer student and/or tourist plans without Bituach Leumi. Eligibility is dependent on the plan but almost always is from day one. (You can even sign up from Chul).
These plans do NOT include childbirth, as the hospitals get paid for that by BL and not the Kupot. Pregnancy care is usually included.
These plans are subject to review of pre-existing conditions. (BL plans are not, they must cover you). This can take a day or two, more if there are pre-existing conditions. Pre-existing does not equal rejection of application, you can be approved for coverage excluding the pre-existing condition. (If you have pre-existing, you can apply from chul with sufficient time to get coverage from day one)

Cost: depends on age and level of coverage, basic coverage for a bachur/sem girl is about 140 shek a month. (its indexed to inflation)
Basic coverage covers doctors visits, lab tests and set prices on covered meds (18-36 shekel for most, the list of covered meds is set by the govt AFAIK). Specialists and certain procedures may have a co-pay of 36 shekel or so. The kupa may deny out of network coverage for non BL members, for certain procedures, (that would be approved for BL members) - but most procedures should be available through the kupa anyway.
see: https://chaimvchessed.com/information/medical/kupat-cholim/

Providers of Travel Medical insurance plans: (often a good choice for shorter visits)
Note some travel insurance plan are limited in duration (e.g. to 90 days), may depend on which state you are from, and they may include more than just medical, e.g. trip interruption insurance), which will influence the price
•   AIG Travel Guard https://www.travelguard.com/ (offers a wide range of coverage from <$1/day to $3+/day, and a long duration of stay)
•   Allianz (AAA website refers to Allianz, which in my mind is a good endorsement) https://www.allianztravelinsurance.com/trip - Not currently covering trips to Israel (as of 7/2024) (according to DDF comments 30 days same price as 360 days).
•   https://www.uhcsafetrip.com/ (limits duration from some states to 90 days, $2/day)
•   IMG https://www.imglobal.com/travel-medical-insurance . These plans cover claims for unforeseen illness or injury unrelated to the hostilities, but as always, all claims are subject to all terms and conditions of the policy wording.
•   Trawick - https://www.trawickinternational.com/
•   Worldtrips https://www.worldtrips.com/#/start
•   GeoBlue - https://go.geobluetravelinsurance.com/ (cannot be bought after trip began)
•   MondialCare (based in Europe) https://www.mondialcare.eu/
•   Traveler Insured - https://www.travelinsured.com/
•   HTH – https://www.hthtravelinsurance.com/   (cannot be bought after trip began)
•   American express at https://aeti.americanexpress.com/travel-insurance/home.do

Note: Should sign up BEFORE trip begins. Beware trip insurance policy many ends upon return trip to home country (e.g. student returning mid-year for pesach), even if that is sooner that end of plan date.

P.s. Many Yeshivas and Seminaries require students to sign up for some form of coverage

P.s. FYI if a person CHV get injured in a terror attack the Gov covers the cost (according to comments on DDF)

Anyone know of health insurance for a long Israel stay?
« on: May 31, 2022, 04:42:33 PM »
My husband and I are going to be living in Israel for two-three months in preparation for Aliyah. Under Medicare, neither of our health plans would cover even emergency care if needed, G-d forbid. Does anyone know of a plan, (even high deductible) that would provide for coverage and medivac if one chas veshalom needs to be transported back to the states.  The standard travel plans that I have been looking at have all sorts of Fizzbin exclusions (if it's Tuesday and a full moon, it isn't covered.)  Anyone know of a plan that would provide major coverage to two seniors?  Thanks in advance.

Amex does https://aeti.americanexpress.com/travel-insurance/home.do

For the first 60 days of your trip (if you don't have a return in place it may not work)

Covers preexisting if you buy soon after you book the trip.

It's very cheap $32 for 100k coverage.

We used it once and they reimbursed.

they don't cover preexisting as far as I saw recently. Please advise if you have a plan that does

Anyone with a primary US health plan (excluding Medicaid) can purchase a plan that covers pre-existing conditions at Insurance4trip.com/en as long as it is purchased no later than 1 day prior to departure.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

@ExGingi (as an insurance professional)

Don't most US employer-based health plans cover out of country claims too?
If so, is there any benefit to the local plans (for a child/student) there for the school year?

They do for many conditions but charge more for each
Generally macabi is easier with preexisting

There are differences between various plans. In order to cover overseas it would have to be a plan that has out of network benefits, and would generally only cover emergencies.
