Grrr my bike arrived today at 8:30am!  I was out of the house by 7 and I won't be home until 6:15!  And I don't have time to ride before Thursday afternoon (taking first section of the CPA exam Thursday).  At least I know it's there now.  I'll try and post an update after I test it out.

The Dahon C7 bright red folding bike :)  I thought I'd fit in better riding through Phyllis Terrace (Vizhnitz) in Monsey with this bike. ;)

Starting next week, if you see a yeshivish guy in his late 20s riding a bright red bike anywhere between 306 and Union from Viola to Maple, odds are good it's me :)  My entire daily routine fits within those ~2 square miles 5 days a week.

As someone who bikes a lot (I am biking 400 miles from san diego to phoenix in june) I would say your best option is the hybrid. The thin tires are great for the roads and makes for a great commuter bike. Personally although I have never ridden a folding bike I would say that considering Monsey has hills you want something light and with lots of gears.
What would you recommend for me? I walk about a mile to work, in the city, so there are no hills, just straight sidewalk and roads. I'm not very tall, at 5.5. Storage is not a problem, I have where to put the bike at home and at work.

P.S. I don't ride that much to justify a very expensive price tag.

Thanks in advance.

In that case, by yourself a cheap "walmart" mountain bike. And if you find yourself enjoying it and riding more  you can always sell it and upgrade. P.s. ALWAYS wear a helmet.  It saved my life :)

Also, when measuring for bike fit, you should always have at least an inch between you and the top bar when standing on the ground.

Just in case you come to a very quick stop and you slide forward off the seat..... you'll be VERY glad for that inch of space!  As will your children and your childrens' children, though they won't know it. :)

Was biking early sunday morning (training for my upcoming bike 4 chai ride)right after the rain, we were going over a bridge made of metal grates right after the rain, my back tire slipped and gave out, I had my shoes clipped into my pedals so was unable to get my feet out. My head landed on the bridge and the cement road barrier. Thankfully the only thing I sufferd on my body was 13 stitches I gashed my knee, all the way down to the bone.
I hope to be training again sunday morning.

Go to a bike store. They'll steer you right.  If you haven't gotten your key yet, you'll get a $10 coupon towards a helmet purchase. If you like in Brooklyn I'd recommend going to Roy's on Coney Island and Ave X, or REI in the city is good I think.
