He was begging to get caught. Not wearing a mask was a cry for help. He was probably better off in federal custody than being chased (and probably threatened) by the people he owes money to.

I don't think anyone's defending him. @hvaces42 is pointing out a very interesting theoretical wrinkle that can add a bit of depth to the story here.

When you meet them in Gamblers Anonymous meetings after they have been caught and either done time or going to do time you may have a different perspective. Go to an open meeting and enlighten yourself.

Ah. That makes it a little more understandable. I just couldn't see why anyone in today's day and age would think they could actually not be found.

Very correct observation, I too saw that he wasn't wearing a mask.

Same story happened in Miami, result of heavy gambling debts, narcotics etc
