Hey kiwis,

I'm planning a trip to NZ next summer (our winter) in the end of december 2014. I will be flying into CHC and out of QNZ 5 days later. I wanted to know if people thought the long way drive to QNZ through franz Joseph etc was worth the extra hassle or whether going the shorter way and seeing Lake Tekapo and spending shabbos there would be just as nice. I will obviously be driving down to milford sound after shabbat.

Thanks

Is it possible to hire a driver to take us around from christchurch, mt cook, to queenstown, and milford sound?  we don't want to drive.

I'm planning a trip to New Zealand for January and I had some questions.

First, here is my basic itinerary :

Day 1: CHC to Te Anau.

Day 2: Te Anau to Milford Sound and then back to Queenstown for the night.

Day 3: Queenstown to Franz Josef

Day 4:  Franz Josef to CHC.

Is this a reasonable itinerary? Also, is it worth stopping by Mt. Cook on the way down to Te Anau?

Thanks in advance

Looks pretty good. I wouldn't miss Mt. Cook. I actually started a day in Te Anu and drove early to Milford sound, did a cruise and drove all the way to Mt. Cook that night. I did a heli ride there to see the mountain and it was no question one of the best parts of my  NZ trip. When are you going?

Good question, Mt. Cook is a place I'm not sure how to see. I plan on doing the Heli tour, but if I do that does that mean driving by it is pointless? And is there anything else worthwhile to see from Christchurch to Queenstown?

if its just a heli tour, no need to drive for hours out of your way. plenty of them at franz josef which pass mt cook as well

I wouldn't have missed the Mt Cook side of things but then again I only did the Heli from that side.

So I've seen differing opinions on food from the US...

If US food doesn't have any fruit and is cooked (a la Pomegranate meals) would there be an issue with NZ customs?

Australia only allowed shelf-stable food like La Briute.  They were very responsive via the contact info on the customs site.
Try emailing NZ customs.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

Will do.

If worst comes to worst, I guess I can have Klein's in Australia ship us some food...

Has anybody tried Lewis Kosher in Bondi for takeout to NZ? And what have you heard about Klein's?

Lewis are expensive for take-out. And there may be a problem in NZ anyway, they don't allow fresh foods from Australia. You could try the kosher deli in Auckland

http://www.greysavedeli.co.nz/catering.html

They say that they ship all over NZ. The shop in Wellington used to also provide frozen meals, but I think they stopped.

The place is tiny, very expensive, and minimal selection - at least that's what it was a few years ago...

I've brought meat and fish into NZ from AU, no guarantees though.
Have it (whatever "it" is) vacuum packed and sealed with the company's label.
