Was in town for Yuntif
Wanted to go to milts for dinner tonight and feast on the "Dansdeals" Rib Sandwich.
Called them and..of course they don't have it and wont make it.
Have to say...pretty foolish of them not to put it on the menu (not to say they aren't foolish when they serve the miltburger with a flimsy bun instead of their pretzel bun).
Its like you have to make a special request to get the good food.

Data point: Very interesting that the rib sandwich is made from the ribs that don't sell the day before...Dan and many others have commented that the ribs taste much better when they are a day old...

+1
It ruined the meal when I got a sandwich on a convenient store bun. why should you have to ask for the premium?

I took the call from your friend, and I have to say I am appalled at his attitude. First of all, I offered him the same deal I gave Dan. Buy a slab of ribs, and I would be happy to chop it up and make a sandwich out of it. It is a money loser for us to make the sandwich, which I explained to your friend. He proceeded to trash the restaurant, and me personally, using very unkind words. I generally try very hard to accommodate customer requests, and I do listen to comments. However, with attitudes like that, there is very little room for me to be even somewhat accommodating.  Niceties go a long way.

And, as to the Milt Burger, plenty of people order it on the pretzel bun. Many also feel that it is too much bread, and difficult to eat, so we continue to offer it on the standard hamburger bun.

I messaged my friend a link to your post. He said he didn't realize that the unofficial rib sandwich was being sold to others at the price of the slab of ribs.

He also said that his exact words were that it was "kind of silly that it was not on the menu" and suggested that perhaps the reason that it was not "generally offered" was because milts is a not for profit and is not always in the interest of what the people want. Im not saying i agree with him. Just passing on what he told me.
He said that he did not say anything that possibly could have "trashed you personally" but is sorry if he offended you.

Obviously as a not for profit, it doesn't make sense to take a loss on it. Perhaps you should consider putting it on the menu for a profit...if that is indeed what people want.

I will add, knowing my friend VERY well, that he likely didn't use "very unkind words". In my 15 years knowing him i have never heard a single curse word come out of his mouth. As for his attitude, he may have been annoyed (which I'm not saying is an excuse).

Personally, I would be more than happy to pay more for the rib sandwich as I have had it before and it is incredible. All this chatter about these awesome sandwiches got me salivating but unfortunately I'm not in Chicago at the moment. Was there for yuntif and only stayed a few days after.

Hatzlocha!

I appreciate his response, I simply took his frustration as an act of aggression. Just so you all know, we are NOT a non-profit. We give our profits to charity, but we still run the restaurant the same as we would were this not the case. It does not affect our operations at all. I do take exception to being called out for compromising quality or my integrity.  There are always many factors in play in my decision-making, and I do make mistakes on occasion. Just yesterday, I had to handle a vegetarian customer who was upset we were out of tofu. I made a mistake by forgetting to order it, and I admitted to it.

I understand that the rib sandwich is a great sandwich, but we have had serious problems sourcing out the ribs in general, and I need to reserve them to be sold as slabs. We are a bbq restaurant, and I need to make sure we have smoked ribs on the menu. That is a priority, the sandwich is simply a (tasty) byproduct of our operation. As things stand, it is not a realistic option for us to offer it daily.

Milt's is great.  For a (semi) closer option, you could also check out Bebe's Kosher Deli downtown (usually open till at least 6pm).  Solid food.  Orange line from Midway.

Interesting theory. But consider these three alternative scenarios.

Background
Yordei dooma's friend (the Earl of Sandwich), walks into Milts and orders a rib sandwich. There is only one slab of ribs left.

Scenario 1
Bryang: Sorry, we're not making rib sandwiches tonight.
The Earl of Sandwich orders a Milts burger. Henche comes in, orders the last slab of ribs, and happily licks his chops while the Earl of Sandwich eats his Milts burger on a limp, soggy, store-brought bun, sobbing quietly to himself.

Scenario 2
Bryang: Sorry, we're not making rib sandwiches tonight.
The Earl of Sandwich: Ah well, I'll have a slab of ribs. Then Henche comes in, and asks for a slab of ribs. Chomping on his ribs, the Earl of Sandwich watchesHenche sobbing quietly to himself as he orders a Milts burger.

Scenario 3
Bryang: Sure, just for the price of one slab of ribs, because I only have one left and am making it into a sandwich for you.
Henche comes in and orders a slab of ribs, but there are none left. The Earl of Sandwich spits rib juice at Henche while watching him sob quietly to himself.

Scenario 4
Bryang: Sorry, we're not making rib sandwiches to night because we only have one left, and I heard Henche might be stopping in.
The Earl of Sandwich: Okay, I'll have the rack of ribs.
The Earl of Sandwich accepts his ribs, cuts it into pieces on his plate, carefully cuts all the meat off the ribs, and then licks it. He returns to the counter, and asks if his leftover ribs can be made into a rib sandwich.
