Still funny, although a little scattered. For what it is worth, I have been searching my brain cells for a solution, and I think I have found it. It is gonna take a little r&d, but I think I found a way to salvage the rib sandwich and please the masses.

Ok, but can the real rib sandwich still by available by special order whenever there are leftover ribs from the previous day? Maybe there could be  a ddf password.  Like you ask for the rib sandwich, and then you whisper "ctownbochur".

(Also, looks like nobody understood my point.  I was saying that if I can order the ribs and eat them, why can't I order the same ribs cut up and put on a sandwich--either way there will be less ribs for subsequent customers.)

I haven't been zoche to have it yet but it seems that the magic is in the fact that they are leftover

I'm going to be in Chicago this week for business. Having lunch at Shallot's, don't like sushi - what do you recommend?

If all goes according to schedule, lunch should finish about 2, and I have to be back at ORD by about 5 (flight's at 6:30). I'd like to swing by Romanian and Milt's to pick up some food to bring back to NY.

I've read the recommended list from Romanian, but what will survive the trip back okay? Should I call ahead and ask them to freeze or vacuum pack something for me? And if I'm not eating at Milt's, what should I get to go that will still be good when I get back?

I was also thinking to try for the Sears/Willis Tower, but the weather doesn't look great (cloudy skies), and the lines are supposed to be long. Is 360 (Hancock Observatory) worth it? Anything else to try for if I have a little extra time?

You haven't had sushi until you've had shallot's.

What don't you like about it?
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

Just not a fish and sushi guy. If you have a specific recommendation for a small sushi side dish, I'll consider it, but still looking for a main for lunch.

Just not a fish and sushi guy. If you have a specific recommendation for a small sushi side dish, I'll consider it, but still looking for a main for lunch.

I recommend going all appetizers, including: Citrus Ahi Tuna (even if you're not a fish guy), Gnochetti, lamb sausages, hush puppies, meat combo, steak nachos (i.e. all the appetizers...)

If you go for entrees -- the rack of lamb is fantastic but very pricey.  If you're going steak, no need to go above the chef's special, which is the best (and best priced) steak on the menu.

At lunch, you can also order off the bar menu.  Highly recommend the "Breakfast Burger" (fried salami, fried egg on a burger -- it's not officially on the menu).  The "Twenty Burger" is also amazing.

Bring back Beer Sticks and Salamis from Romanian.  No need to vacuum pack.

If you go to Milt's, the ribs should still be good for when you get back.

Warning: if you're coming in Thursday, I'd give yourself some extra time to get back to the airport from the city.  Bulls/Bucks playoff game in Milwaukee, and there should be heavy traffic from the city going to Milwaukee around the time you'll be trying to get to the airport.

Very much disagree on your choices at shallots...
Not gonna comment on all of them, however the only item i recommend (that you did as well) is the twenty burger on the bar menu.
Some great apps - avocado egg rolls and jalapeno poppers if you like spicy...Although you did say all the appetizers so perhaps we do agree on 'some' of them.

The chef special steak is nothing to write home about IMHO except the price... And you get what you pay for IMHO. The signature steaks are far superior unless you are just getting them all 'well done' anyways (ie without flavor). the patron, the waygu, the del monico and others (that I'm too lazy to go see on their menu) are all excellent and far superior in flavor than the chef special (which fyi is a very lean cut... No fat=no flavor)

Romanian - you are correct that you don't need to vacuum pack the beer sticks and salami. Be sure to hang up the salamis right away and make sure they are not touching anything. The beer sticks IMHO taste best when still in the cellophane wrapping and strung up to dry like the salami. The regular pastrami is also very good, although you probably want it vacuum packed. don't be fooled into buying the Romanian pastrami as Romanian makes both of them and the one they call romanian pastrami is just a different cut (it's a shoulder pastrami and leaner... Less flavor)

Milts- the rib sandwich is all I'd recommend.

I've had the Patron steak (medium rare).  It was about as tender and flavorful as a saddle.  I'd have sooner eaten my tefillin straps.

I would have sent it back, but my grandfather a"h was paying for the meal.

We need to tell you where to get your saddle too?? :D
I will admit that steak has been hit or miss at times. More times than not (that i had it) it was incredible.

Romanian also makes a chicken stuffed with kishke that is excellent. You have to bake it yourself

Have you had the Breakfast Burger?  Or the Mexican Burger?  (Both off-menu.  Both excellent.)

The steaks aren't worth the money at Shallots.  (The lamb chops are.)

i Have not had either...although heard great things. will have to try them next time im in chicago.
IMHO the steaks are better than ive had anywhere (Except for Asian in BA).
Worth the money? Each to their own budget. I think they are worth it. they are quite pricey... Much easier to stomach (the price that is ;)) when you aren't paying for it

I did hear good things about a new supermarket that opened yesterday and will grill any meat you want, however you want, for free (you just buy the meat).
Perhaps someone in Chicago can fill us in on the specs

Yup, Mariano's.  Great prices and selection.  Deli, cheese shop, "soup bar" (and an "olive bar", too), bakery, sushi, and a meat section/grill.
