If you're delayed on the tarmac, that's not going to help as they won't let you off.
Is that generally less common than a pre-boarding delay?

Hmm, what would you do in that situation?  Let's discount things that would get you arrested.

I've been on tarmac delays that caused a trip in vain. Until it's 3 hours you're not being let off that plane unless there's a medical emergency.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

I wouldn't board a flight that if it was delayed on the tarmac up to the DoT guidelines wouldn't land with enough time before shkiah to get me where I needed to be- 3 hours for domestic.

The Halacha is that one is not supposed to take long trips Friday afternoons. I think any flight would count, as there are just too many variables on a plane, even on a short flight. I would venture to say that 99% of people who fly on Friday afternoons are doing so for convenience and not out of a genuine need. This is my general refrain any time elal gets in hot water for their Europe landings also.

What was the longest you were on the tarmac for?

Right, this is exactly what I am afraid of... My flight is 2pm Chicago time - if all is on schedule, it gets me into EWR at 5:10 NY time. Shkiah is around 8:00pm, so that works. If the flight is delayed more than an hour prior to boarding, then I simply wouldn't board, and I would have a backup plan of somewhere to go for shabbos. the issue is if I board and then get delayed on the tarmac...

I would suggest you consider how pressing getting back to NJ before shabbos is and decide if it's worth the risk of potentially being stuck in Newark Airport for Shabbos if there are unforseen delays after boarding.

Agreed, I hear you... My family will be in NJ so I want to avoid being away from them for Shabbos if possible. It's also not ideal to wait and then fly motzei shabbos or sunday as it will be tisha bav... But that doesn't negate anything you are saying, you're 100% right. There don't seem to be any "good" options...

You should be able to find a late sunday night flight if flying on 9 av is also not an option for you.

True - but then we are at 4 days away from wife and family... trying to avoid that if possible.

Yup, but it was due to de-icing. MDW de-ices at the runway, as opposed to the gate. Got delayed 90min waiting to de-ice on a trip to LAS a couple years back.

For those with MDW experience, do you agree that a tarmac delay (more than just a brief one) is unlikely? Of course it's possible, but I'm just trying to make the most informed decision....

Weird. Maybe this was a one time thing, but they didn't make it seem that way at the time. It was Christmas eve, so they may have been short on crews.

Not a ton of exp. with MDW (I avoid it due to distance) but I'd say it's pretty unlikely.

It's not unusual for flights bound for EWR (and anywhere in the NYC area) to be subject to ground-holds and in-air holding patterns during high congestion or in case of even minor weather events.
