I recently stayed at the W Lake Shore which is the one by the Lake.  It is outdated and overrated.  Furniture is falling apart and  "hip" music is always blaring in the lobby.

You'll also pay over $60 for parking.

is it worth spending 400+ a night or redeeming 12000 spg points?
also do you mean w city center or w lakeshore? (I prefer hotel near water) TIA!!
Lakeshore. I got a really nice 2 bedroom suite so it was worth the points for me.

Anyone know if the rental car companies have an issue with renting at MDW and returning to ORD or vv?

Quick TR from a trip my wife and I took 2 weeks ago:

used 18000 Avios for 2 RT tickets between YYZ and ORD. Could not have been a better deal
Stayed at the Hyatt Magnificent Mile. We really liked the location- 1 block from Mag mile and close enough to transportation to other locations.
I said it was our anniversary and asked if they could upgrade us a suite, which they were happy to do. The hotel is gorgeous and the beds were super comfy! The only complaint I had was that it is right next to the hospital so we heard some sirens late at night. Other than that, it was perfect!

We did the architecture boat tour, which was a great way to see some sights of Chicago. We went to Milts and everything we had was delicious, including the Milt's burger, the daily special (a pulled rib sandwich) and the appetizers (fried Okra, the nachos and the sliders). The Okra ended up being on the house, as they said they didn't think we liked it because we had leftovers. In reality, we were just so full from the rest of the food! The chips for the nachos weren't amazing, but overall it was a good dish. The total came to about $60 per couple (we met another couple there so we split the appetizers), which included tax, tip and a house drink.

We also spent time roaming around Skokie and went to Kens diner to pick up dinner to go. Got deli sandwiches, which were good, but not cheap. I remember when Ken's was in its prime and it just isn't there any more. They had a ton of staff standing around watching TV because the place was empty.

We went to Second City comedy club and it was amazing! So nice to go to a comedy show and have it be hilarious without it being over the top dirty.

I know there isn't much detail here, but this is my first time doing this.

Happy to answer any questions!

How timely. Thanks for the write up.

How'd you score the upgrade at the Hyatt, by email prior or at checkin?

Ken's was disappointing? Too bad. Can you recommend another alternative?

I'll definitely be checking out Second City comedy club.

I'll definitely be checking out Second City comedy club.

I just called the hotel and said that I was taking my wife away for our anniversary and is there any chance of getting  an upgrade. I had not even booked the room yet, and they said just call us back when you book, and we will put the upgrade through.

Was a really amazing hotel. I would ask if there are any rooms not near the hospital side. It wasn't a big deal, but if someone is a light sleeper or there are a lot of emergency calls, I could see it being a bit annoying.
