Best use of Amex Gold points

My friend has an Amex Gold card, he wants to use his points (MR?) for hotels, does that make sense? If yes what is the best way to go?

No, the hotel transfer ratios aren't favorable.
Better off transferring to airlines or trading with people for hotel points.

MR points usually have a bonus when transferred to Delta (skypesos) which, while not the best redemptions for flights I've heard they actually have decent hotel redemptions

Meh.  No elite benefits for hotel bookings on DL.com and just how good can the redemption rate actually be?

Go with Aeroplan, CO, ANA or trade with someone for SPG, Hilton, PC, or Hyatt, etc.

Why would someone want to trade SPG points for Amex rewards if there is nothing better about Amex rewards?

Obviously you'll have to give more AMEX than the SPG you'll get in return.
And there's not nothing better.  AMEX to CO is better than SPG to CO for example.

 but wouldnt Amex SPG be better if you want the miles by ANA,AC,BA,or DL assuming 1 can transfer from SPG to them on a 1:1 basis or not less then that
