Insurance for moving truck
« on: May 09, 2013, 10:17:35 AM »
I am renting a truck for a one way move and trying to figure out which insurances I need to take out. Apparently my auto insurance won't cover anything at all so I need to decide whether to take out Limited Damage Waiver (LDW), Personal Accident Insurance (PAI) and/or Supplemental Liability Insurance (SLI).

http://www.pensketruckrental.com/renting-from-penske/coverage.html

Any experience/thoughts? Thanks!

Unfortunately, you'll have to take out their coverage. Include the LDW. You may not need PAI. Speak to your agent about that. and ask him also about the SLI. They may cover that.

Good luck with the move.

I just did it one way from Miami to Monsey in a 26 foot Penske. Was easier then I thought.

I took out all the insurance.
AAA gives a good discount with Penske

Moving from Montreal to CLE.

According to my agent they won't cover anything  >:( In that case do I need all 3?

Thank you! Yea, Penske is great. They were very expensive for the weekend I needed them, so I booked for 3 days later and called in to have them change the date, kept the better rate and they added a day for the move!

Why do you need PAI? Seems like you own med insurance would cover that?

Welcome to CLE, it's the best time of year to move here :D
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

Hmm... For me you would be right, but I am hiring someone to help with some of the drive. Would I be liable for him since the truck is under my name or would his own insurance kick in?

What happens if your washing machine falls on him?!

IMHO PAI is just another way for the rental company to make a few $.

If my washing machine falls on someone, I am liable! That's one of the (many) reasons we have home owner's insurance!

I want to agree with you guys and not get the PAI but it's not worth potentially getting sued for $$$ instead of forking over $50-$100 unless I would not be liable/already covered by some other insurance.

If you have health ins you won't need PAI but you won't have coverage for anybody else in the car if you don't take it.

IMO better to play it safe

Will the other person's health insurance act "primarily" even though it's "my car"?

Not really. If the mover gets hurt in an accident he has/should have workers comp to cover that. That's not really your concern
