1 -What ISO are you using? The D5100 should be pretty much noise free up to at least 800.
2 - A bigger flash well help you with that not due to the larger size,  but due to the fact that the light could be bounced, or better yet, taken off-camera.
3 - Blurry or fuzzy? A larger aperture (lower f-number) lets in MORE light, which reduces blur. If it's fuzzy, on the other hand, it's probably not in focus.  Large apertures have less of the picture in focus, and cameras have a harder time focusing in low light, so that may be your issue.
thanks so much. I will look over some pictures i have.

Forsure your right Bout the flash. That's the main reason i want to get one. I usually need more light in my indoor pictures, but not direct light.
And i about the ISO i like to keep it as low as poss.
And I will look to see my usual f-settings.

I just bought mine a few months ago at Canon's wholesale price (right before I left my camera store job for a new job):

All lenses are Canon brand

Canon Rebel T3i
18-55mm lens (comes with T3i in a kit)
55-250 f/4-5.6 IS
50 f/1.8 (the "nifty fifty")
2 additional batteries (vidpro "Power2000" brand... good and cheap)
16gb class 10 SD card

I also have an Olympus FE-270 P&S that I got for free with a cracked LCD.  The replacement screen was $18 on ebay and there's a video on youtube that shows how to replace it :) (although the video is in Japanese or something...I forget what language, it was 2 years ago)

Forgot to add:  I got the whole thing including a camera bag for about $740

the problem is with the built in flash is that it goes onto the subject im shooting and ruins the pictures. What this softener you use?

The Puffer is awesome, I've used it a lot.

To lower the intensity on your camera, press the flash button once to raise the flash. Press it again at the same time as the exposure compensation button (the little +/- button under the shutter button), and spin the wheel to the left. This will adjust the flash power down to -3 in 1/3 increments.

Is there a shortcut like that for Canon?

I believe not - gotta use the menus. Using the Quick Control screen is a bit faster - click on Flash Exposure Comp.

Let the Canon vs. Nikon flame war begin! ;D ;)

When I use the flash I usually use the 430ex ii so I adjust from there. I use the built in flash for the wireless capability when I use an off-camera flash so adjusting the EV from the menu every time gets tedious...

If you're using the built in flash as a wireless commander you could set it not to influence your exposure at all, so you won't have to futz with FEC. The setting you need is the one that only shows a hot shoe flash:

I rarely use the built in as part of the exposure. When I use it as a commander, it's a pain to adjust the off camera FEC by wading through menus

You can find "fakes" for a lot cheaper.

Very true. If you go that route though, beware of the color correcting versions (amber, fluorescent). Their actual output is 1000s of degrees off from what they advertise (I've tested them).
