passport sent in, travel to canada?
« on: May 12, 2013, 06:41:02 PM »
My husband just sent in his passport to renew and totally forgot that were supposed to be going to canada next week for a wedding. He doesn't have any receipt or anything as they told him told him to just mail it in. Anyone have any advice on how to go about this?

Did he expedite it?
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

From CBSA (Canada Border) website (http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/security-securite/admiss-eng.html):
"When you enter Canada, a CBSA officer may ask to see your passport and a valid visa, if one is necessary. If you are a citizen of the United States, you do not need a passport to enter Canada. However, you should carry proof of your citizenship, such as a birth certificate, certificate of citizenship or naturalization, as well as photo identification. "

Phone number is: 1-204-983-3500 or 1-506-636-5064 (both may be long distance?)

I would suggest printing a copy of the webpage as well. Also confirm with the US side what documentation you will need to return home.

Once couldn't find my passport at the US border (ended up being under my seat), the let me through with my (regular) NY license.

Friends of mine went with no passport had no problems at all.
I believe the most they will do is give you a warning.
Leave your self extra time just in case they have to do extra security check

Can't you get a temporary enhanced license quickly?

Right, that's what I'm more worried about. (We'll be travelling with our little kids and don't want to get totally stuck...)

That is a plus for you in regards to the border people just letting it fly, as people reported up-thread.

Can't you get a temporary enhanced license quickly?

This is what it says on the site:
"Once you complete the enhanced license application process, you will be issued a Temporary Operator's Permit to drive. The operator's permit does not qualify as a secure document for border-crossing purposes. Your enhanced license is valid for up to four years and should arrive in the mail within two to three weeks."

For a US citizen it is much easier to get into the US than Canada.

+100

I would be shocked if they would not let an American citizen who's with his entire American family back in to the US with birth certificate/license/whatever else you can get your hands on.
