IMO it depends on the the financial status of the family.

I would say the floor is about $1500-2000

Meh, my mother is still waiting for one...just depends on priorities I suppose.

And average is 4k-5k?
Sounds on the high end to me.  Especially if you "know" someone in the business as we all do.  Got both a diamond and setting that way.
Diamonds have no intrinsic value as it is, just one big farce.

Unless prices have gone way up since I was looking there were plenty of very nice though not huge diamonds to be had for $1,500-$2K and settings for under $1,000.

They like them yes, but the nicer stuff comes once you can actually afford it.

So get something that looks nice and put "the rest" into a good life insurance policy or towards a down payment savings account.

Meh. No life insurance until you know that you actually love her. Doesn't usually happen with our kind right away, especially because we basically marry strangers
