So now in leaning back on the Honda odyssey after all the reading here

Only other thought would be a Honda pilot but still thinkin minivan is more useful long run

SUVs look much cooler and don't have that stigma attached, but minivans are just so darn practical...
When the refreshed 2014 Ody comes out you can probably score some great deals on the 2013.

 if ur looking for a minivan none of the above mentioned suv's are comparable (highlander ,pilot, traverse, cx9, explorer, traverse, arcadia, Durango)have no room for storage when using the 3rd row the ford flex does has room   but  its a very long truck its not a minivan.now u said alternative which u explained "were I live I'm more inclined to get an SUV for many reasons.." I understand u mean weather the Toyota sienna has an awd model u can check that out.
As for some of these suv's u would like to consider there gas mileage also

pilot vs odyssey. pilot awd rough ride when using 3rd row no storage odyssey is minivan lots of comfortable room I think it give better gas mileage better ride

Pilot has a rough drive only when 3rd row up?? ???
also gas mileage is not a huge difference between Pilot and Odyssey
