cheapest way to keep a US cell number

my att family plan is expiring in 2 weeks. i am currently in Israel , so i dont want to start another plan and have to pay a lot of money each month just so i dont lose my number. what is the cheapest way to save my number?? which service can i port it to that will require the least money for the longest time , without my number expiring??

Port to Google voice? Can you do that? If not prepaid plan is cheapest.

true but those plans usually require more money to be added every monthly or so , otherwise they expire...

I have ported in ($20), and I know others too.
Had absolutely no issue.  My first time hearing any problem. 
It did take two full days, and you may lose any SMS sent to you during that time, as they warn you in advance.  However according to the first Google result in the above link, when you port out of GV, it is immediate.
