You only earn hotel points/stays when you book directly from the hotel's site.

Not so, but according to the T&Cs of most programs you arent suppose to be able to get credit, but most Definitely a YMMV issue. And I speak from experience with a few programs, but it is getting harder each year

Where do you book and which programs have you had success with?
Considering that most hotels have best rate guarantees I'm not sure why anyone wouldn't just book from the hotel.

you cant BRG against a PL rate, especially since you wont know the hotels name till you won the bid and No Refunds

as for getting credit Hiltons,Marriotts and yep *W (but *W is alot harder as they have changed their computer programs) Hyatt till a yr or so ago was Legit w/o playing any games, Ive heard that people at times still get credit at times with Hyatt but far froma slam dunk

My Advice is to expect no credit will be forthcoming and if any does great, = no one should go the PL route if getting credit is Important but see it as a gift if it goes thru, which wasnt the case a few yrs ago, as it usually went thru.

I did get HH and MR credit in '09 , needed a hotel for an overnight Airport stay for doing some MRs and didnt want to use Pts when PL was able to be had for <$50 ai, most reg rates were >$150

as long as its not a Hotel won on a bid or if the name of the Hotel wasnt given out till after you booked it, so PL and Hotwire are no good and any other case where you wont know the name till after purchasing it

OP was not referring to a bid on priceline, but a regular stay, so it could be BRG'd.

I've never been able to get stay credit at SPG or Hyatt except for when booking directly.

True that a regular stay would be matched so why not book with the hotel (unless you are booking thru a cashback website, for some).
But your question, "why anyone wouldn't just book from the hotel?", would include those bidding. So, the answer is simple, its cheaper.

go to FT and the Hyatt forum or PL and do a search a couple of yrs ago you see they knew they would get the Haytt and got Everything credit wise to boot Dirt Cheap, then Hyatt cahnged its policy and stopped allowing credit for PL

true but once you mention the name PL they assume it was won as a bid and you will be Denied and then have to keep calling back and hope that its still available via the reg booking way

Absolutely, if you don't care about status/points/free internet, etc. and you have no points for free nights then bidding on priceline is a no-brainer as long as you do your research.

Biddingfortravel and tripadvisor are great places to start.

i like booking with hotels.com because after 10 stays they give you a free night worth the average of the 10, so basically you could look at it as 10% off per night

That was worthwhile back when they were giving a $400 stay for every 10 stays.
With it being the average of 10 stays it's nowhere near as lucrative as regular hotel status programs or as cheap as priceline.
