Anyway, back to the Hosmer play at the plate...
Mets mistake wasn't so much the errant throw by Duda. Hard to expect more from the least skilled defensive position on such a high stakes play. Major blame belongs to Wright. He should've let the short stop field the ball and held Hosmer at 3rd. Hosmer's only mistake is not getting further down the line as the play developed. He should've been 1/4-1/3 of the way home by the time Wright threw the ball rather than 10-15 feet.
No way could the 3rd basemen know the SS was going to get it. The runner should have been so far down the line to force the 3rd basement not to throw to first.

Agreed on the point about Hosmer - he should have never let there been a throw to first. He should have been in a position where he forced Wright to hold him.

While you may be technically correct about Wright - hard to lay blame. Third basemen are taught from little league to play every ball they can. They have a much easier play at first base because your momentum is taking you towards first base.

ETA: Lets not forget the bonehead play to let the game be tied!!!

No way could the 3rd basemen know the SS was going to get it. The runner should have been so far down the line to force the 3rd basement not to throw to first.

So what's boneheaded about the play?

A. Wright Fielding the ball (apparently not in your opinion) and throwing to first.
B. Dudas bad throw
C. Hosmer running home
D. Hosmer failing to get farther down the line before taking off
E. None of the above
Risk is opportunity

That's why she presumably doesn't play 1b. To take this conversation full circle:
NL 1b = AL dh

Correct she plays a real sport, soccer!!!  :)

When we have soccer games and it is raining we always have parents calling and asking if we are playing. My standard answer is "of course we are playing. This isn't baseball."  :P

If you listen to the broadcast, I think it was Verducci who said he would've wanted Flores call for the ball.

For the opinion that Wright shouldn’t have fielded the ball - there was a Yankee game this year, 2 outs in the 9th, man on 3rd, yankee batter hits a ground ball between 3rd and short. They both look at each other, the ball rolls between them into left, and the game is tied. You’d rather lose the game being aggressive than being passive.
