American sports are a weird phenomenon. The commissioner running the operation is hired by the owners to protect their interests, not the sport's.

Karl Marx was a fan of a team with a cheap owner.

Meh. So make salary minimum and maximum caps.

This is a must for any league that wants to be more competitive. However - caps affect players earnings as well, I don't follow MLB but if the MLBPA had the desire they could push it through just like every other major sport. Assuming they push for it, it will be tied to a revenue share that the owners will push to be lower than what they pay right now.

Will never happen. MLBPA, which is the strongest union in North America, will never agree to a cap on earnings. And, the big market owners won't sign on because unlike the other major sports, most of the revenue in baseball comes from ticket sales and RSNs, not major TV deals. So the disparity in earnings is so extreme that even Wellington Mara and Art Rooney possibly wouldn't agree to share revenue.

Fun times harassing the umpires about staring at the sun or not wearing their eclipse glasses for today's absurd strike zone in Cleveland.

New Mendel's menu is awesome. And the Cap1 seats are now padded!

From a whatsapp chat today. I didn't even see anything from the Cleveland game. I mostly just follow the Yankees, and all three series have had inconsistent zones and a couple absurd calls (against both teams, this is not whining about the Yankees getting screwed). But it seems like it is everywhere.

Seems like the umps are trying to usher in the robo strike zone era.

The only thing different about the umps is we now we have better technology to hammer them with.
Only on DDF does 24/6 mean 24/5/half/half

That hasn't changed this season. But also, my judgment was clouded having just come off an Angel Hernandez series

Now that's a DP!

Nice throw and tag on out #1, but the DP was because Verdugo decided not to run.

Farewell John Sterling.

So interesting to see the reactions from people speaking so fondly about him when they used to get on his cae so much. I think many have feelings which mirror my own. He is a legend who I both respected and loathed as an announcer, and then started to love thanks mostly to the absurdity of his game calling. And no matter how many times he said, "It is high, it is far, it is ..... caught", he was always fun. He will definitely be missed.

He's been cutting back since Covid. He's 85, and his aging definitely shows. Seems he wanted to go out on his own terms

Fine, but why mid-April?

Oh, no idea. But it wasn't sudden. Suzyn knew it was coming, and it seems the Yankees were already planning the Saturday tribute.

Not sure why he didn't want to do a final game farewell. But it's great for him he gets to decide on the terms.

Joe Posnanski, as usual, says it beautifully
