No it's not, Rivera was consistently good reg season and post season his whole career. Murphy is comparable to Beltran (hit like crazy in playoffs right before he was a free agent).st ever. As good as he was, MadBum never blew a series!

My Murphy comment was a joke. It's a phenomenal hot streak, but just that, a streak. Beltran was really, really good. You're under rating him a bit.

Which is why it is hard to label be

Your first comment answers the second - almost two seasons worth of pitching and less than a handful of blown games. Which other closer can come close? They won't even get the chance to pitch that many post season games.

Didn't the Diamonbacks get to him too in a WS game? Would you pick Rivera or MadBum to close out game 7 of a WS?
Didn't have to go outside of that series if you wanted to make that point (insert Randy Johnson for MadBum). Kim (D-Backs closer) had already blown/lost 2 games for them, including Schilling's first start - and Rivera was dominating on the other side, with a save and a win in 5 scoreless IP over 3 appearances till that point. D-Backs called on Johnson to get the last 4 outs, and he got it done. Yanks did the same with Rivera, and he did not.
Which is why it is hard to label best ever. As good as he was, MadBum never blew a series!
Having said all that, you're completely insane if you want to use Madison Bumgarner as the counter for calling Rivera the greatest (I assume the original intent was closer) ever.

That's not what I remember.
It was a bunt with a man on first and Rivera threw to second for some unknown reason, and of course overthrew the ball to centerfield.

Rivera blew 2 series.

"He blew 2 series" so you are pinning the 2001 ws on him and what else? 07 ALDS when he gave up that hr to sandy alomar, or 04 red sox? he gave up 1 earned run in all 3 of those series... dude has 96 career post season games and theres less than handful bad memories.

ETA - also, that was my point... bunts, steals, errors, bloops is how he lost that game.

I started this by calling Rivera 'best ever' but included a ? as in there is room for debate. I just picked one name, which doesn't mean that I would pick MadBum over Rivera to close out a series, just that it's debatable. Craziest part is how Mariano did it with one pitch repeated to the most part. The hitters even knew exactly what was coming, and he still had tons of success...

He could have saved the series in game 4 and didn't...

More likely than somehow amassing 141 ps ip and throwing to a 0.7 era with 42 saves  :)

How in the heck was there no error recorded on that play?! Even if it was a base hit to begin with, Cespedes booted the ball past Conforto towards left.
